My Brother Won an MLK Scholarship Essay Contest
As I wrote in this journal entry ("Giving Gens X and Y a Bad Name: Or, Waiting for the World to Change") not all of Gen Y is apathetic:

In this follow-up to the OP (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=364&topic_id=2480875&mesg_id=2486347) I wrote:

My brother was born within one week of John Mayer. My brother and "all" his friends don't resemble the apathy, passivity, or victimhood I hear in Mayer's generational whine.

Quite the contrary - they're mobilized, they're active, they're engaged, they're aware, they're well-informed, and they're doing plenty to change the world. If Mr. Mayer and "all" his friends are sitting around waiting for the day when they're gonna run the world, they're going to find that people like my younger brother and "all" his friends are the ones from his generation actually doing it.

Today, I heard that my brother won a first-place $1000 scholarship for his essay on the meaning of MLK's legacy. At the awards ceremony, he had to read an excerpt - and he has finally overcome his fear of public speaking!

As he continues to pursue his teaching degree, he is beginning to find his voice, and I know he will be an inspiring teacher for his students - no matter their color, creed, financial circumstances, or background.

Sorry to brag, but I'm one proud big brother tonight! (Besides, it allows me to tell him "I told ya so!" about his writing.)
