Bodies Of Young Children Found In Charred Car

Mar 5, 2007 5:00 pm US/Eastern

http://wbztv.com/local/local_story_064124218.html

(AP) SPRINGFIELD -

A father killed his two young children and himself by setting his car on fire
in the parking lot of his estranged girlfriend's workplace Monday, police said.

Hipolito Ortiz, 37, set the car ablaze in an industrial park in Springfield shortly
before 10 a.m., police said. Inside the car, the bodies of 2-year-old Adrian Ortiz
and 6-year-old Genesis Ortiz were burned beyond recognition, police said.

The children's mother, whose name was not released, was at work inside Harvey Industries
when firefighters responded to the parking lot at 9:30 a.m.

Police Capt. Robert Cheetham described Ortiz and the mother as estranged for the past month.
Ortiz, however, drove the woman to work, dropped her off at 7 a.m., and planned to spend the
day with their two children.

"What transpired between the drop off and the murder-suicide, I have no idea," Cheetham said.

Police didn't rule out that the children were killed before the fire.

"It's as bad as it gets," Cheetham said of the burned crime scene.

The mother was distraught upon learning what happened, and was brought to a local emergency room,
said Dennis Leger, a spokesman for the fire department.

Waltham-based Harvey Industries manufactures doors and window frames and operates a warehouse
in Springfield. The company said in a statement: "We are surprised and saddened by the events
that occurred in the parking lot of our Springfield manufacturing facility earlier today."

The company offered grief counseling to its employees.

She will, somehow. We all cope with whatever gets thrown at us. It's not like anyone has a choice. But damn...

I hope, somehow, she finds peace and happiness in her life again.

What the fuck is wrong with people?

I blame it in part on pride being taught as a virtue worthy killing over, instead of the deadly sin it is supposed to be (at least according to the Christian faith).

Humility and perspective would be valuable lessons to most people today.

from what I read...and he went nuts when his wife finally broke free of him...

I think he killed those kids to hurt her more than anything...and I guess in his sick twisted way he "won" that battle..but I hope he is burning for it.

15. It seems to be the week for this kind of thing:
http://www.nbc12.com/news/state/6306852.html

An eight-year-old Chesterfield girl is still in a coma after she was severely burned in a weekend fire investigators believe her father started. Ashley, a friend of the family says Tammy Ngyuen hasn't woken up since she was rescued from her burning home Saturday morning.

Investigators believe it was the girl's father who did this to her. He was 43-year-old Than Nguyen.

Detectives say he poured gasoline inside his ex-wife's home on Trickling Creek Road early Saturday morning. Chao Ngyuen reportedly tried to stop her ex-husband. But relatives say he set the house on fire killing himself, his former mother in law, and his son.

BOSCAWEN, N.H. —

The shooter in a custody dispute that turned into police standoff and murder-suicide
had a history of mental and physical problems, a state prosecutor said.

"It looks like the perpetrator was having some kind of physical and mental health issues
recently," senior Assistant Attorney General Jeff Strelzin said Saturday, less than 24 hours
after the shooting. "We are running down those issues."

The shooter was Jacob R. Smith, of Concord, N.H. His victims include Brenda A. Barnum, her
11-year-old son and their host, Mark Bamford, Attorney General Kelly Ayotte and State Police
Colonel Frederick Booth said in a statement.

Barnum, 34, died a short time after the shooting and her son is in critical but stable condition
at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.

He is being treated for an apparent gun shot wound and stab wound to the chest, according to
the statement that withheld his name.

Bamford, 44, is in stable condition at the Concord Hospital where he is being treated for a
single gunshot wound, according to the statement.

An autopsy on Barnum's body was done Saturday, but the results are being withheld pending
notification of her next of kin. An autopsy of Smith, 34, was scheduled for Sunday, according
to the statement.

Neighbors said the woman and her son had been staying at the home of Mark and Wendy Bamford.

One neighbor, Kristy Matheson, told the New Hampshire Union Leader that the man stormed the
house looking for his son but was not allowed to see him. He returned with a gun and shot his
ex-wife, Matheson said.

"This woman was shot and killed by her ex-husband. He went and got his gun, came back and busted
into the house," she said.

Mother-In-Law: Pilot Called Before Crash

By TOM DAVIES

Associated Press Writer

BEDFORD, Ind. (AP) - The man whose small plane slammed into his former mother-in-law's house, killing him and his 8-year-old daughter, had told his ex-wife before the crash he had the girl ``and you're not going to get her,'' the mother-in-law said Tuesday.

Eric Johnson, a student pilot who had soloed before, strapped daughter Emily into the passenger seat of a leased, single-engine Cessna on Monday morning. Less than two hours later, officials said, the plane smashed into the home of Vivian Pace, the girl's grandmother.

Pace told reporters outside her damaged home Tuesday that Johnson called her daughter, Beth Johnson, by cell phone shortly before the crash.

He told his ex-wife: ``I've got her, and you're not going to get her,'' she said.

How in the WORLD someone could kill a child--any child--out of sheer spite, I'll never understand. It's even less understandable when the child is your own.

I was trying to get my head around the plane crash story just this morning, and then find this thread this afternoon. Sad.

19. What must have been going through that man's mind to do such a thing?
Even if he and the wife were having problems, why would he want to harm his kids? He had to have been mentally ill, and no one noticed, or wanted to notice.

I feel for the mother, she has lost her husband and her kids. And to have all this happen at the hands of the husband is just so horrible. May she find the strength to go on with her life.

What a horrible world we live in today. What is wrong with people?

Especially in such a horrible way. I just can't wrap my brain around this. Hating another person so much you would kill your children in one of the worst possible ways imaginable? As a parent I just can't fathom this.

29. I guess they do it to hurt the other person in the worst way possible
Clearly the only thing that matters to these guys is the control they exert over their wives/girlfriends. When she decided to break free (and I can guess that there must have been signs in these cases that the guy was either controlling and/or abusive), he took the way out that would hurt her the most. Scumbags. I almost wish he lived so the state could execute him. But he got what he deserved ultimately even though death is probably too good for this sort of asshole.

32. Some more info here:

For reasons that may never be known, Hipolito Ortiz pulled his two young children out of day care yesterday, drove them to the nearby parking lot of the factory where their mother worked, and then doused himself, his children, and the car with a flammable liquid and set all ablaze, police say.

It was not until Springfield firefighters extinguished the flames that they saw all three bodies. The corpses were blackened beyond recognition, a gruesome apparent murder-suicide that left Springfield officials and rescue workers distraught and struggling for answers.

"All the officers involved and the firefighters involved and the crime scene technicians have all got some pictures in their head that nobody would want," said Springfield Police Commisisoner Edward A. Flynn. "It was a bad scene."

Killed in the blaze were Genesis Ortiz, 6, and her 2-year-old brother, Adrian Ortiz. Their mother, Mayra Rivera, 29, was so distraught at the news that she was taken by firefighters to the emergency room at Baystate Medical Center, where she was reported in stable condition.

Ortiz, 37, and Rivera were the parents of both children but had never married, police said. Authorities said yesterday that there were no outstanding restraining orders or complaints against Ortiz.
