1. Stay safe.
We seem to have gone from early Spring to mid-summer in a week here in PA. We had marble sized hail 10 days ago. I've never seen that here before :scared:. We don't have a basement, so we went to a walk in closet that's under the second floor stairs. It was pretty scary and I've lived in MN so I was used to the tornado sirens going off.

2. There was a tornado in Berkshire County about a decade ago...
Edited on Tue Jun-10-08 11:46 AM by bicentennial_baby
Great Barrington, I think? Not unheard of.

On edit: It was on 1995:

During the evening of Memorial Day, may 29 1995, a strong tornado touched down in Berkshire county Massachusetts near Prospect Lake in North Egremont at 706 PM. It then moved east at 40 mph, crossing into Great Barrington then Monterey. The last damage occurred near Morley Hill in Sandisfield at 724 PM. Officially the track was from 1 mile southeast of North Egremont to 1.5 miles southwest of West Otis. Its damage classification was considered F3 to F4 (the fujita damage scale ranges from F0 to F5).

Three people were killed as their car was lifted several hundred feet in the air then dropped into a wooded hillside. Twenty-Four people were injured, many from flying glass. Approximately 75 homes were either damaged or destroyed. Damage was estimated near 25 million dollars. In Great Barrington, the local fairgrounds and a gas station were destroyed. A truck smashed into a supermarket causing a large hole in the building. A nursing home lost its roof. Debris was carried more than 45 miles to the northeast in Belchertown, where a fairgrounds racing ticket was found along with white corrugated plastic roofing material.

At the same time as the Great Barrington tornado, a different tornado was occurring in Connecticut. It moved across South Britain and Southbury from 723 PM to 735 PM. Its damage classification was F1 and costs were estimated at 10 thousand dollars.

Here's a pic of the fairgrounds:

I think it took out a private school in Great Barrington, if I remember correctly.

You are resourceful finding that article from back in 1995! ;)

I'm not near the Berkshires but I will have a severe T-Storm tonight. :scared: I hate them!

7. Might have been Simon's Rock School...
My parents are in Franklin Co. As long as it stays south, I won't worry. The Appalachian range up in No. Berkshire is usually good at breaking up the bad storms. We shall see.

5. How often has Massachusetts had any tornadoes?
Regardless of the time of year, I don't recall hearing too much about tornadoes in Mass. They're usually subjected to Nor'easters, but not tornadoes!

:wtf:

8. We have them but it's rare that they touch down.
This is unusual, afaik.

We have hurricanes and Nor'easters but we rarely get a Tornado Watch!

9. Very few. I used to live up there in Salem, MA, during half my child-hood.
The topography of the land is not really suitable for tornado development, too hilly, but that doesn't mean Massachusetts is immune to tornadoes. They're freak-like events, but they happen.

...there was a tornado watch. The sky was a veddy peculiar color, and the clouds had long tails. Nothing materialized at least where we were.

14. Please stay safe!!!! We have a heat advisory here and a big thunderstorm went through, leaving
a beautiful blue sky now, with heat. My son's school closed early because of the heat wave.

Meanwhile, more storms are expected later today and tonight. Heavy, damaging winds predicted.

17. ((Awe))... We will ! It's funny you mentioned school closings...
We have had snow days but today was the first time I've seen schools in Massachusetts closed due
to high heat!! I'm not near Berkshire County. I'm down in Western Norfolk County. High heat
and T-storms tonight but otherwise, we're fine. Bicentennial Baby's parents are near the Berkshires
though and The Shadow is in the Tornado watch area or close to it. They need to keep an eye out!
