What does Ann Coulter's statement really mean?

For those who don't know she called Edwards a Faggot (well more or less (kind of the way some people invoke Rule #3 to call someone something without actually saying the words)). She has such said "C'mon, it was a joke. I would never insult gays by suggesting that they are like John Edwards. That would be mean."

So what does this comment really mean?

In merely using the epithet, she annouces her hatred and bigotry. Applying it to Edwards, she makes the allegation that Edwards is gay. Thus, it's a compound statement with the primary message of deep-seated hatred.
