Two more things that disgust me about racism
1. I hate that, in my town/county/region, bigotry is the default, so that any white asshole can feel comfortable in assuming that any other white asshole is just as racist and closed-minded as he is. As such, conversations begin with the attitude that "we're" all of the same mind, so there's no need to edit ourselves when airing sickeningly racist/sexist/homophobic opinions. I hate that I am made to feel ashamed because I'm not racist, and wish me luck if it ever gets out that I'm atheist. Holy moley--they won't know whether to crucify me or run me out of town.

2. Having two young children, I hate that the local default bigots feel free to share their idiocy without even considering that I might not want my children to be influenced by some racist asshole who shouts to me from his porch. I'm just stupid and polite enough not to say "shut your filthy hole, you idiot," choosing instead to excuse myself from the conversation as quickly as possible. But not, I fear, quickly enough.

There's a lot more that disgusts me, but I've been on a protracted rant these past few days, and I'm itemizing in the order that they occur to me.

Thanks for listening!

1. I moved to southern Indiana in 2005 with my family. We went to the County Fair..
for the first time and I asked my wife, "Have you noticed that everybody is white?" My daughter's best friend was portuguese, and kids would call her names. My daughter hated it. I liked the people, but there weren't too many I felt comfortable about being open about politics. My daughter now is in a diversified school, and she absolutely loves it.
