Minister launches drive-in church
MARIETTA, Ga., June 9 (UPI) -- A Georgia church had its first drive-in service Sunday attracting worshipers who remained in their cars while the minister preached.

The Rev. Norman Markle of New Hope Methodist Church in Marietta, Ga., says he has been pondering the idea of a drive-in church for a couple of years, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Monday.

Markle sees drive-in spirituality as the logical next step for people who eat in their cars and conduct business by cell phone.

To launch his new service, Markle purchased a low-powered AM transmitter and posted signs along Cobb Parkway urging people to "Worship in Your Car Just as You Are."

2. Yup, sure have been.
My first vague memory in this regard was Robert Schuller, so I looked it up. Sure enough, he was the first in 1955.

"Schuller started out in 1955, as pastor of California's first "drive-in" church, in Garden Grove. (Yes, it was actually situated in an old drive-in movie theatre, and Schuller preached from the roof of the concession stand.)"

3. Used to go to drive-in mass ...
... on Long Island, back in the early 'sixties - and it had been around for years before I started attending.

It's not about "laziness" either. I used to go with my neighbours, who had a baby and a toddler. If the youngin's acted up or started crying in the middle of mass, the windows could be closed so that they wouldn't disturb other attendees.
