GOP will lie about Big Oil to defeat the Democrats
I stumbled across an article by Fred Barnes that just may have the answer as to how to fight the GOP.

I don't usually think of a Neo Con as a source of great light, but this may be an exception.

The GOP will seek to impress on the American people that the cause of $4 gas is because our government refuses to let Big Oil drill in certain areas. Which is a lie. We have $4 gas because Big Oil is awash in windfall profits.

How can we combat this Republican lie ? I'm not sure. But I think if we sought to encourage the American public to seek immediate nationalization of oil wells and oil fields -- it would help.

Republicans finally have a winning argument on a big issue, and they'd better make the most of it. It starts with high gasoline prices--the single most infuriating issue to voters these days--but doesn't end there.

Democrats are not being blamed for causing the price of gasoline to reach $4 a gallon, at least by the public and at least for now. Where Democrats have stumbled embarrassingly is in their campaign to persuade the public that the American oil industry is the chief culprit. A Gallup national poll in May found only 20 percent blame the oil companies for gouging, down from 34 percent a year ago.

2. It's pretty simple.
Ask the Republican how long it will take for the gasoline to reach the market after they go through the process of siting, constructing the facility, building the pipeline, refining, etc.

Msongs is mostly right. We don't need to get off of oil, we need to get off of fuel. Any substance drilled or mined for that is used for transportation holds us hostage to its shortages and distribution.

Electricity can be locally generated. Batteries are getting better. We don't all need SUV sized vehicles to get around which would mean lighter vehicles. Electric sedans and compacts are the way to go, along with mass transit.

3. there is a slight error in your headline -
GOP will lie about anything to defeat the Democrats.

There fixed it for you.

The Dem's have to know that not only will the GOP try to blame them for gas prices, but the economy as well and I am sure ABC has a mini series already in production blaming the Iraq mess on the Democratic party.

Anyway, i am not sure what the Dem's can do to combat this, but we in the net roots can keep reminding people that the oil companies are predatory, buying up all the independent refineries in the 80's and 90's, shutting them down, JUST TO DRIVE THE PRICE OF GAS UP. Also the magic fairyland Alaska oil is at least 10 years away, and there is simply not enough of it to make that much of a difference. Hopefully saying it over and over will make it eventually rise to the mass consumption news level.
