17. i use four sites
intellicast, weather underground, wetherbug, and the national weather service. i use the storm track feature on the radar page. but all the tracking is a educated guess because the weather has a habit of surprising us...

stay save

20. Potential timeline for Kansas
8:00

Unchanged as of 8PM. Will update this at 9PM.
TOMORROW
SuperCast showing line of severe storms develops at 3PM near in a north south line located from Phillipsburg, to Hays to Greensburg.
Individual storms will be moving northeast at 40 to 60mph. Some storm cells may turn a little east of northeast. call it east-northeast motion at 40 to 60mph. any storms that make this turn will contain strong rotation and tornado potential. any storms that can maintain an almost circular structure on radar will also have a greater tornado potential at this time.
6pm - the line of storms is now projected along a mankato to ellsworth to kingman line. we are likely to have tornado warnings in progress at this time period.
9pm - leading edge of severe storms now reaches Seneca/Manhattan/Emporia/Wichita. Tornado threat remains high at this time. If storms group together into one large line... the threat will begin to diminish... but if we continue with discrete individual cells... they will continue with a very high tornado risk. If we do see a long line of one big storm... wind damage would become the highest probability.
10PM - Topeka now in the severe line. Hiawatha, Holton, Mayetta, Osage City and Burlington in the highest risk. Tornado risk remains high.
Note: This may be the first wave of several waves of severe with tornado potential. Dry-line feature is not going to move along with the storms... and may fire off repeatedly.
Overall Picture: Isolated storms may develop in advance of the larger line of storms. This means that all... are in a risk of severe weather beginning at 4PM on Thursday. The threat will go through at least Midnight... and could last until 4 or 5AM on Friday.

7. Are you personally situated okay?
I mean as far as: got a basement or other "safer" place to ride it out, got temporary water and food provisions if needed, a way to communicate. . .

I'm holding hopeful thoughts for you and your fellow Kansans! May all be well.

10. I did it a few times in Mpls/St. Paul.
That reminds me: a flashlight, some candles, and some board games to pass the time until the power comes back on.

11. Twisters followed us
all the way across country from Florida (Palm Beach County) to Paducah Kentucky, to Russell Kansas, back in 2000. When our Uhaul broke down just west of Russell, the mechanic scratched his head and said "Boy, y'all are kickin' up quite a tailwind."

Be safe Greenbriar!

12. I am a little worried about tomorrow
and usually I take all this as just the norm for this time of year. We barely escaped softball sized hail yesterday, they warned my tiny town (1 block long) specifically. We got nothing but 70 MPH winds luckily and a lot of rain. They have been talking about this outbreak coming tomorrow for several days now. Last I heard was last night when they said we would be smack in the middle of the worst alert area. It could have changed by now, I hope it has.

Hang in there, I know you hate this. Is there someone you can stay with? I will be alone for the entire evening but my sons and my husband will be back home late evening so I will not be alone for much of it. Something is really weird about being alone in a tornado outbreak. It is just creepy, creepier than usual.

13. I just got an email
Edited on Wed Jun-04-08 08:31 PM by MuseRider
from a meteorologist acquaintance. He told me to be very careful tomorrow. He has never seen such advance warning with such a dangerous forecast here before.

Great, that makes me feel better. :eyes:

Look at it this way, how often are they really right? (OK, I know but I am trying to be optimistic) I really do not need more rain and the wind has not let up since April. Funny, I was just thinking a little while ago that the anniversary of the June 8 tornado in Topeka is close. I hope to never live through something like that again.

Edit to correct an error

18. I hope you do.
I hate when these storms come and freak you out. Being alone during an outbreak is not a good idea anyway. Let us know so we can at least know you will not be alone.
