Local carrot farmer donates $100,000 to fight gay marriage
Local carrot farmer donates $100,000 to fight gay marriage

Interesting tidbit of election news:

Staff and wire reports

Bakersfield carrot farmer William Bolthouse donated $100,000 to an initiative aiming to fight gay marriage — a measure that will appear on the Nov. 4 ballot along with the presidential race.

The initiative qualified for the ballot Monday, less than a month after the state Supreme Court overturned a ban on gay marriage. June 17 marks the date when California counties will be permitted to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

The National Organization for Marriage California donated $700,000 to the campaign. One of the organization’s largest financial contributors includes Bolthouse, who declined to comment about his donation Tuesday.

The measure’s proponents said the campaign to promote the initiative may exceed $30 million. Supporters have spent about $1.8 million to collect signatures and publicize the initiative, according to campaign filings.

Other supporters include San Diego developer Terry Caster ($172,000); hotel developer Manchester Financial Group of San Diego ($125,000); Fieldstead and Co. of Irvine ($400,000) and Knights of Columbus Headquarters in Connecticut ($250,000).

I don't think I hate anybody that much. Well, in the current political system, I don't think I can afford to hate anybody that much.

5. Your comment reminds me of a magazine comic I saw years ago. . .
A visibly angry guy in a suit is all agitated in his living room, while his wife sits calmly behind him. Says she: 'Well, if you feel so strongly about it, Henry, you shouldn't get an abortion."

7. You know how sneaky those gay people are...
The only way to ensure that any future "wife" is not some gay guy in drag is to outlaw the premise of gay marriage.

And with the price of even carrots these days, who could blame a fellow for trying to get a little beta carotene cheaply!

men and women are pretty different creatures and we don't always think the same way. A guy in drag might be a lot easier to get to understsand my point of view. :)

3. WTF are these people so damn afraid of? I just do not understand
this at all.

My rule of thumb has always been if I don't have to hold anything, help, watch, or participate then nothing that two (or however many) consenting adults do is none of my damn business. Maybe something's wrong with me.

43. Done. Here is my "suggestion" to Bolthouse:
I wanted to let you know that I LOVE your carrot juice and I buy it often at CostCo. But I have a suggestion for Mr. William Bolthouse. If you ever want me to purchase another one of your delicious products, you need to take a good hard look at yourself in the mirror. I hope you don't consider yourself a Christian because real Christians do not exclude and real Christians leave the judgment to their God. Your $100,000 decision to exclude and judge fellow humans is going to cost you a lot more in the end. First, customers like me are going to boycott your product (and I'll be sure to contact CostCo as well). But even more importantly, hatred does more damage to the person doing the hating. I suggest you think about that.

I figured they'd just throw out all the complaints they got over the next few days, but maybe they'll read a suggestion.

11. Why don't these so called Christians
do what Jesus asked them to do? Ya know that bit about "taking care of the lesser of these my children", etc. He could have used that money to stock the food banks that are so depleted they have had to close their doors. I am a Christian, but they must be praying to a different God than I am. I have no problem with gay marriage or abortion. I pray someday my sister and her girlfriend could marry. They have been together for years and it is just not fair and it breaks my heart.

I am an atheist, but I do know of the things that Christians are taught to believe. Hell, I think the whole "Do unto others" thing is a really great principle. I live in the heart of the bible belt and can tell you that most Christians here do not even come close to living to their beliefs.

I use to be controller of a labor contractor that supplied him with contract laborers. When he wanted to pay us less, which means we pay the workers less, we did not want to do it so he would not do business with us anymore.

Bakersfield, CA is a cesspool of right wing nut cases. All you can get on AM radio there is just about 90% country music and conservative talk.

The Bakersfield Californian newspaper endorsed Bush in 2004 saying that none of the problems we faced at the time were his responsibility but were thrust on him by others.

34. Because gay marriage is a threat to carrot farmers everywhere...
In places where same sex marriages are allowed to take place it's been proven that the demand for carrots plummet. No one is sure of what the exact correlation is between gay marriages and the lowered consumption of carrots. However, it's speculated that it may be due to more of the population becoming joined in matrimony and no longer giving a damn how they look.

I say beat the rush and stop eating carrots now! At least all those grown by Bolthouse Farms.
