Tomas Young back in ICU
http://blogs.pitch.com/plog/2008/06/antiwar_vet_tomas_young_hospit.php

<skip>

Once he regained the ability to speak, Young was moved out of the critical care wing. But on Sunday his condition deteriorated and he returned to the I.C.U. A few miles away, at the J.C. Nichols Fountain near Country Club Plaza, more than two dozen anti-war activists rallied for Young. Among the participants were Smith and Ellen Spiro, the producer of "Body of War," who has kept close ties with the family and flew to Kansas City when she heard the news.

This morning, a hospital spokeswoman listed Young's condition as "fair." Smith says she's optimistic he'll be out of the I.C.U. soon, but it will be a while before he's back home and even longer before he makes a full recovery.

"There's no long-term memory loss, but his short-term memory was affected and some of his fine motor skills are a problem," she says. "And his speech isn't where it was before ."

1. This child deserves better
In days earlier, he would not have survived his wounds at the place where they were sustained. Medical advances have enabled doctors and nurses to keep alive people who would be better off dead. There comes a point where the quality of one's life has to be considered. This kid has such grievous damage, his poor body just can't maintain life for any length of time.

2. I disagree he wouldn't have survived in earlier wars

In BODY OF WAR, Tomas meets with a Vietnam vet who had the exact same injury. He was shot in the same place and has the same degree of paralysis. And he has lived for 40 years since being injured.

The difference between him and Tomas, though, is that the Vietnam vet was in the hospital for 21 months and Tomas for only 3. The Vietnam vet got physical therapy and after care that Tomas did not get from the VA.

6. We have such shitty media here
A reporter from the paper I linked in my OP emailed me today to APOLOGIZE for not coming to our vigil yesterday. And I hadn't even emailed her! I am still not sure how she got the word. We had a reporter from our community radio station come. And that's it. No TV, no other radio stations, no newspaper.

Tomas's mom said the nurses at the hospital seem amazed by the attention he is getting. Phil Donahue blew them away. And that made me so sad. If our LOCAL media did its freakin job, the nurses would know who Tomas is. DAMN!!

9. Speaking as a former reporter
that's pretty bad. But I guess it is par for the course for our country nowadays.
