Sibel Edmonds Case: Hastert to receive payoffs for 'services rendered'
So, former FBI translator Sibel Edmonds is again proved right. For more than a year Sibel has been predictingthat Dennis Hastert will join a lobbying firm involved with Turkey, and now we learnthat Hastert is joining Dickstein Shapiro.

In the "Representative Engagements" section of Dickstein's website, we learn that they represented "the government of Turkey in connection with the development and financing by private sponsors of the Baku-Ceyhan oil pipeline and TransCaspian gas pipeline spanning from the Caspian Sea to the Mediterranean."

Dennis Hastert, who is listed in Sibel's "Rogues Gallery," was caught on FBI wiretaps accepting bribes from Turkish criminal elements associated with the Turkish government, as documented in Vanity Fairin 2005 and elsewhere.

This youtube clip from Kill The Messenger, a documentary about Sibel's case, discusses some of Hastert's involvement as mentioned in Vanity Fair: http://www.youtube.com/v/5utAAfuAo-A

In researching the Vanity Fair article, journalist David Rose interviewed various congressional staffers and counter-intelligence officials who are familiar with the case. He reported that there were three separate types of bribes paid to Hastert:
1) "(T)ens of thousands of dollars to be paid to Hastert’s campaign funds in small checks."
2) "(T)ens of thousands of dollars in surreptitious payments in exchange for political favors and information."
3) "(A)t least $500,000"

Hastert was lucky that there was literally zero follow-up in the mainstream media to these most serious charges. Hastert did not sue Vanity Fair for libel, instead, Hastert got his spokesman to send Vanity Fair a bizarre Letter to the Editor in response, 6 months later. BradBlog has the letter here, along with Sibel's effective debunking of Hastert's response.

The only action taken in response to the startling revelations in Vanity Fair was by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) which filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) asking them to investigate the "(T)ens of thousands of dollars to be paid to Hastert’s campaign funds in small checks." According to the Vanity Fair article, these bribes were funneled into Hastert's campaign in amounts less than $200, which would mean that the contributions were below the threshold for reporting. The Federal Election Commission droppedthe investigation in early 2006 without answering the specific charge.

The bribes identified in Vanity Fair are probably just the tip of the iceberg, merely down-payments on what was promised to him when he left office, and could 'earn' a multi-million dollar salary as a lobbyist.

Sibel describedhow the process works, using another member of her "Rogues Gallery," former State Dept official Marc Grossman as an example:
"For example, look at Mr. Marc Grossman. He used to be the U.S. ambassador in Turkey and used his position within the State Department to secure future higher-level positions while in office—and I would like to emphasize this—while in office and with several agencies knowing about it. Some people in these agencies wanted to investigate these cases but they were prevented from going forward.

..And just take a look at where Mr. Grossman is today. Within a few months after he gave his resignation, he obtained a position with a semi-legitimate Turkish company that is supplying him with a very attractive monetary reward."
And Sibel has made the same case elsewhere:
"Please do not make the grave and naive mistake of assuming that Grossman found and obtained his highly lucrative and questionable positions after his resignation in January 2005."
It appears that these arrangements aren't the typical 'Revolving Door' retirement packages, but rather specific quid pro quo deals. People like Hastert and Grossman and the others quite literally sell out their government while in office on the specific promise that they will be rewarded when they leave.

Hastert won't actually be a 'Lobbyist' http://nswbc.org/Op%20Ed/Op-ed-Part1-Nov15-06.htm">according to Dickstein Shapiro, he'll be "providing strategy advice to the firm and its clients" - spending half his time in Chicago and half his time in DC.

Most likely, some of that 'strategy advice' will include advice on how to corrupt some of the sitting congressmen: The people who bribed Hastert and the others need to ensure the continuity of their operations, regardless of who is sitting in Congress. Sibel says that the foreign entities who are successful in this business simply need to follow a basic recipe:
"Get yourself a few ‘Dime a Dozen Generals,’ bid high in the ‘former statesmen lobby auction’, and put in your pocket one or two ‘ex-congressmen turned lobbyists’ who know the ropes when it comes to pocketing a few dozen who still serve."
Dickstein Shapiro, Hastert's new employers, were deeply involved with Turkey and the Central Asian region during the time that Hastert was caught taking these bribes - 1996 to 2001. For example, It was Dickstein Shapiro, in conjunction with the Baker Botts law firm, who put together the 'contract of the century' - the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (or BTC) pipeline which was to carry oil from Azerbaijan to the West, via Georgia and Turkey.

Some of Dickstein Shapiro's other claims to fame include:
1) Defending "former Assistant Secretary of State Elliott Abrams in connection with the Iran-Contra investigations."
2) "(S)uccessfully defended and represented prominent clients in a number of other high-profile cases such as...BCCI Bank"
3) Employing convicted felon Lewis Scooter Libby (and his wife), who was a partner at the firm from 1986 to 1989.

If there's any justice in the world, Dickstein Shapiro will soon be adding Dennis Hastert to their 'Ex-employees who are now convicted felons' Hall of Fame.

This is absolutely disgusting!
The least we can do: try to make up for the absence of real media, and get this out there/raise awareness.

3. Thanks for another informative post
Thanks Lukery - keep up the good work.

Isn't this so very disgusting and infuriating? How can we expect to survive as a democracy when we have deceitful crooks like Hastert supposedly representing us? This a a perfect example of what is so terribly wrong in our country today. We are not and cannot be represented by those such as Hastert, whose only goal is to grow wealthy at our expense. Sibel called it so very correctly, but who listened? Where was, and where is the MSM? Where do we turn to begin to take back our country? Sibel is certainly doing her best - what can the rest of us do?

8. More Hastert Scandal!!
And this is reported by one of their own: FOX

FOX News Documentary Shows Congressmen Sent Millions in Earmarks to Their Own Families
A number of U.S. congressmen and their families — including former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert — have personally profited from congressional earmarks they slipped into federal legislation, a FOX News documentary reveals.
…..
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,361061,00.html

In February 2004, Hastert, with partners and through a trust that did not bear his name, bought up 69 acres of land that adjoined his farm some 60 miles outside Chicago. The price was $340,000. In May 2005, Hastert transferred an additional 69 acres from his farm into the trust.
Two months later, Congress passed a spending bill into which Hastert inserted a $207 million earmark to fund the “Prairie Parkway” which, when completed, would run just a few miles from the 138 acres owned by Hastert’s trust.
After President Bush flew to Hastert’s district in August 2005 to sign the bill, Hastert and his partners flipped the land for what appeared to be a multi-million dollar profit.
Hastert declined repeated interview requests from FOX News, but on Thursday, after FOX began to promote the program, Hastert’s lawyer emailed the documentary unit producer Jason Kopp.
“As you might imagine we are very sensitive to even a suggestion, innuendo, or inference that Speaker Hastert's work on the Prairie Parkway was improper or illegal,” attorney J. Randy Evans wrote.
Click here to see the e-mail from Hastert's attorney.

ABC News Update on Hastert Story
May 24, 2006 10:21 PM

Brian Ross Reports:

Richard Esposito and Rhonda Schwartz contributed to this report.

Despite a flat denial from the Department of Justice, federal law enforcement sources tonight said ABC News accurately reported that Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert is "in the mix" in the FBI investigation of corruption in Congress.

Speaker Hastert said tonight the story was "absolutely untrue" and has demanded ABC News retract its story.

Law enforcement sources told ABC News that convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff has provided information to the FBI about Hastert and a number of other members of Congress that have broadened the scope of the investigation. Sources would not divulge details of the Abramoff’s information.

Ex-House Aide Charged in Abramoff Scandal

Another Congressional Aide Charged in Abramoff Scandal
By Andrew Tilghman - June 2, 2008, 3:35PM

A former chief of staff for an Oklahoma congressman is the latest figure caught up in prosecution of Jack Abramoff's lobbying ring.

John Albaugh, the former chief of staff for U.S. Rep. Ernest Istook (R-OK), has been charged with a conspiracy to defraud the House of Representatives, taking perks and doling out official favors:

John Albaugh is accused of accepting gifts in return for official favors. The charge is outlined in a criminal information filed in federal court on Friday. Such documents are normally entered as part of a plea deal. A court hearing was set for Monday afternoon.

According to the criminal information, Albaugh accepted tickets to George Strait and Tim McGraw concerts.

In one email, a lobbyist from Abramoff's firm told Albaugh: "You're going to eat for free off our clients"

After Istook was named chairman of the Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee, a fellow lobbyist emailed a lobbyist from Abramoff's firm (identified in the Information only as Lobbyist C) and said "{t}]hat's good for us!! Hello Albaugh,' according to the court papers.

In 2006, the Sunlight Foundation reported that $207 million in earmarked appropriations secured by then-House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL) benefited real estate investments that ultimately helped he and his wife earn “about $1.8 million from land deals.”

Okay people, we have the momentum, just keep this up!

DICKSTEIN SHAPIRO 250.00

And for those who read my other thread yesterday on Sibel, there's also this line too...

CALIK USA INC. 1,000.00

Haven't been able to check on whether Calik, USA Inc. is a part of the notorious Ahmet Calik's empire or not, and have to get ready to get on a connecting flight at the airport now, but that might be interesting to research too.

48. Dickstein Shapiro employees apparently donated alot of $$ to all 3 candidates
from the looks of Huffington's invaluable lookup at the link. I guess they like to cover all their bases?

"$53,336 was given by people who identified their employer as "Dickstein Shapiro Llp".
$7,600 from 4 people to Republicans
$45,736 from 38 people to Democrats"

http://fundrace.huffingtonpost.com/neighbors.php?type=emp&employer=Dickstein+Shapiro+Llp

But Ahmet Calik is some piece of work. He just bought Sabah-ATV for a cool 1.1 billion dollars. Qatar's in on the deal too. He's buddies with Turkey's Prime Minister, Erdogan. More here:
http://www.hurriyet.com.tr/english/turkey/8879752.asp?gid=0&sz=82992

I couldn't find direct connection to Calik USA Inc., but it deals in textiles which is right up Calik's alley within his empire. What a bunch of corrupt people.

Yes, you are probably right that Dickstein Shapiro droids are equal opportunity bribers who probably has a bigger priority in keeping something like public campaign financing out of the picture than align with either party too much so that they can maintain their power and buying off everyone.

Thanks for the more explicit link on Calik's Sabah-ATV sale. What really hit it over the head for me how much this guy was probably the center of a lot of corruption in that area is watching this film last week at the DOXA Film Festival in Vancouver. From the looks of it, this film has only shown in the states once and that was in Seattle a week before.

http://www.shadowoftheholybook.com/

The festival schedule looks like it needs updating in a day or so. Probably when Arto Halonen and Kevin Frazier get back home from their festival tour. The film does a bang up job on how the mixture of corporate greed and corrupt fascistic governments are really evil. It does so and very effectively to the novice viewer by taking such an obvious small slice of corruption of Turkmenistan's dictators demanding that companies translate their propaganda book into other languages, which they do "quietly" to get their business. To hear these companies in so many examples (even U.S. companies like John Deere and Caterpillar) do this really illustrates to the average person watching it how much more regulation needs to be applied in these areas.

The worst of these corporate culprits is Ahmet Calik, and he's so bad that he even gets himself and some members of his company put in as part of Turkmenistan's fascistic government as foreign nationals. Can you imagine Rupert Murdoch, who's not a U.S. citizen either getting a cabinet position, and not even be citizen of the U.S.?

Arto Halonen would be an invaluable asset to turn on to helping Sibel, as his filmmaking is so effective. The above film needs more promotion and distribution here, which I think it will get soon. A big chunk of the film is showing Frasier and Halonen CONSTANTLY getting rebuffed by an obviously morally and financially corrupt group of people that work for Calik. Without seeing that film, it wouldn't have hit me over the head how much of a likely culprit he is in this whole mess. If any of you can get to see this film, try and do so. Would like to see him work together with Verboud (Kill the Messenger). Not sure whether that's possible or not, but I think they could really help us out a lot if they could! Also, it appears that if there are any sets of individuals that could really tell us what is going on behind the scenes of the government of Turkmenistan, it would be Halonen and Frasier, for all of the heavy lifting they've done over the last few years there.

Halonen is aware of this connection too now, as I sent an email of it and talked with him about it the next day rather briefly at another film screening. I think once he starts looking at this some more, he'll realize that what he's touched on very effectively is the tip of the ice berg, and that perhaps if nothing else, he'll put more about Calik and hits relationship to the messes that Sibel is trying to uncover on his supplementary materials on his DVD too.

62. yes, Calik and more, UAE, etc.
I'll try to get ahold of a copy of that documentary and thanks for the link to the website. I noted the news about Siemens Corp building a spy network for the Turkmen. govt.
http://www.freedomforsale.org/index.php?subbar=articles&req=article00042&ref=

The German connections with this country and Calik's vast holdings is worth looking into as well. I just ran into a fun read about the new amusement park built by Calik's group "Gap Insaat" called The World of Turkman Fairytales."
Yet another connection shows up with the UAE and Calik. Boy this gets more interesting by the minute:

International Project in Turkmenistan from GAP İnşaat 03/24/2008

GAP İnşaat, accomplished another successful international project in Ashkabat, Turkmenistan; United Arab Emirates Embassy Building, one of the most modern buildings in Turkmenistan, is opened.

Constructed by GAP İnşaat, United Arab Emirates Embassy Building is opened with a ceremony, with the attendance of Turkmenistan President Gurbanguli Berdimuhammedov, Arab Emirates President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Çalık Holding Chairman of the Board of Directors Ahmet Çalık.

In the ceremony organized, according to Turkmenistan customs, the presidents and guests were welcomed with salt and wheat. Turkmenistan President and Arab Emirates President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan cut the tape, opened the building and sent their greeting messages to the embassy personel and the people of Turkmenistan and UAE.

Embassy building is on the Archabil Street, the most popular street of Ashkabat, capital city of Turkmenistan. The building has total area of 22.500 square meters, consists of embassy section of 5.600 square meters and residence section of 5.600 square meters.

Embassy Building has four floors and is 26 meters high. It has a meeting room with a capacity of 300 people, offices, embassy floor and royal floor. Building’s security, electricity, computer and air-condition systems are controlled by high technology otomotion systems.

It's been a bit of time since I visited the Sibel Edmonds story so it's good to catch up here and see all the connections, how they work with Bush, the Middle East, Turkey et al., to continue to stop those tapes from ever going public.

She's got one helluva fight on her hands, that is for sure. I did find an article that mentions Calik again in connection with recent US/nuclear power plants in Turkey, Edmonds, etc.
http://djysrv.blogspot.com/2008/01/turkey-plans-5-gwe-8-billion-nuclear.html

Oh and yes, I was shocked at Calik's presence in the Turkmen govt. My God, it's like viewing a huge Octopus with endless tentacles.

And that Idaho Samizdat article is the one I found and put in the earlier thread earlier. That was the article I found right after watching the film and forwarded to the filmmaker that evening. I'm hoping he follows up on that.

There was one European company that had its CEO actually come out and give an interview to the filmmakers and basically made a statement that they apologized for their company having entered in that agreement to translate the book for business favors in exchange, and once they realized they were violating their code of ethics in doing so, they pulled back from their commitment to translate the book. It lost the company business, but Halonen and people like myself wish we had more ethical company execs that put what's right ahead of profits, and hopefully in the future renegotiated corporate charters will reward instead of punish them for doing so. The name of the company slips my mind, and didn't show up in cursory looks of the films' web site.

With your note on the UAE being involved with Calik, it would be interesting to find one interview that "Viewpoint with James Zogby" show on Link TV that might afford us to ask a pointed question to Zogby on this, since his show is funded by UAE, and no doubt that would challenge UAE's interests along with Caliks in their television empire moves. But it would be a question that would deserve an answer from Zogby so that he can show more independence from his show sponsors. Seeing him talk about the ports scandal and the bias entering there bothered me earlier when there was another conflict of interest there.

It is repeated on Saturday mornings (here in PST)... This week I don't see it on the schedule during its initial time, but I do see the repeat showing on Saturday morning. Must be getting preempted live or the online schedule is wrong.

I've got Calik on my radar now.

I kind of look at some of these Turkish involvements much like Sibel does. I used to live in Turkey for five years of my life as a kid, and do still know many people from there and enjoy the friendship of a number of Turks. I see their system needing "liberating" from its current cancers much like the disease that's affecting ours, so I try to be respectful of average Turks just like I'm respectful of average Kurds and Armenians too (and friends with a number of them too).

Similarly, I like a lot of what Zogby has and says on his show, which is why I watch it every chance I get, but I am conscious of his funding there and at times believe that biases him a bit. I think we just need to challenge him on these cases so that we can feel him still carrying out some good journalistic ethics.

Just now seeing the INN report discussion of a new book by London-based Shyam Bhatia that alleges that Benazir Bhutto herself helped smuggle nuclear technology to North Korea on some CDs in exchange for missile technology! Just Friday A.Q. Khan has also asked for release, saying that he had falsely confessed providing nuclear secrets and parts to North Korea, Iran, and Libya and that this confession was "pressured" out of him from Musharraf's government.

This story is getting WAY too complex now!

67. interesting background you have
so you can understand the culture much better than the average American who sadly, is culture poor in that area. I'd love to visit Turkey along with dozens of other countries. Especially interesting to me are the geologic features of Cappadocia as well as the history, archeology of these areas. A great picture of that area here:
http://epod.usra.edu/archive/epodviewer.php3?oid=325600
I used to know several Armenian families who would invite me for dinner occasionally. What wonderful food!

Phew, complex is right - who knew Bhutto smuggled nuke technology to N. Korea.
Thanks for the Zogby show info. Will try to watch him but I don't know if we get that channel.

By the way, I just googled "Ahmed Chalky" which is the other spelling of Calik's name. I came up with this interesting article for you.

68. Had a good Turkish meal at the "Baghdad Cafe" in Vancouver...
Edited on Tue Jun-03-08 04:06 PM by calipendence
Run by a Iraqi man and his Turkish wife there... It was good food too!

Yes, that area around there is near Ephesus and is called Goreme (pronounced "Gor-ehmeh" with the acceent on the last of three syllables). That is a great place to visit in southern Turkey, and right near some good beachside towns too there (our favorite was Bodrum then, though now I hear it has a reputation that has earned it the nickname "Bedroom" instead! :) ). The Christian grottos underground are fascinating amongst those geologic areas, as well as the hot spring falls of Pamukale.

By the way, Ahmed Çalik is the proper spelling of his name, though a lot of us (including myself) get lazy and don't try to cut and paste the proper c with the cedille under it. That is pronounced "ch". Without a cedille it is actually pronounced as a "j" would be. S with a cedille is pronounced "sh", but not relevant here. You've probably heard "Ahmed" pronounced phonetically, but Çalik is pronounced "Chawlook"... Might not be that obvious from the way we pronounce "i"... Might help you also though with some phoneticly spelled searches too though, as long as you're at it.

34. Yet even more on Hastert!
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/04/29/dennis-hastert-named-in-c_n_99136.html

The name of former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert was added Monday to the roster of political heavyweights linked by witnesses to an alleged plan to dump Chicago's top federal prosecutor and kill a criminal investigation into a top fundraiser for Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

A witness at the corruption trial of Blagojevich insider Antoin "Tony" Rezko testified that Rezko told him in February 2005 about an effort under way to fire U.S. Atty. Patrick Fitzgerald and replace him with someone more compliant to be hand-picked by Hastert, then the top Republican in the House.

Rezko said the Hastert designee would then "order the prosecutor to stop the investigation," recalled Elie Maloof, a former Rezko business associate who also testified that Rezko had told him to keep Rezko's name to himself if he were questioned by authorities because it could damage Blagojevich.

See the rest of the story in today's Tribune.
