Officer breast-feeds quake orphans (China)

Police officer Jiang Xiaojuan, 29, was feeding nine babies at one point.

JIANGYOU, China (CNN) -- A Chinese policewoman is being hailed as a hero after taking it upon herself to breast-feed several infants who were separated from their mothers or orphaned by China's devastating earthquake.

Officer Jiang Xiaojuan, 29, the mother of a 6-month-old boy, responded to the call of duty and the instincts of motherhood when the magnitude 7.9 quake struck on May 12.

"I am breast-feeding, so I can feed babies. I didn't think of it much," she said. "It is a mother's reaction, and a basic duty as a police officer to help."

The death toll in the earthquake jumped Thursday to more than 51,000, and more than 29,000 are missing, according to government figures. Thousands of children have been orphaned; many others have mothers who simply can't feed them.

2. this is awesome
as someone who has two children, I say give this woman a medal for every baby she breastfeeds, and make sure she gets plenty of food and water.

wonderful.

45. The more you feed, the more you make
Your body responds to the demand. It's largely hormonal. Sucking produces the "let down" hormone (I forget the name of it...oxy-something), which is responsible for milk production. Anyone who has ever breast fed an infant knows what this feels like.

As long as this woman receives adequate nutrition and water, she can go on breastfeeding as long as there are infants to nurse.

51. A lady I met once fed four at once.
She had a toddler who was still nursing, then her neighbor had twins who she was unable to nurse, so she pumped milk for them, and then she herself had another baby, so until the toddler weaned she was nursing four at once, and then three until the neighbor twins were toddlers and no longer needed human milk.

25. Actually, the act of nursing stimulates hormones that cause lactation.
Edited on Thu May-22-08 03:58 PM by tblue37
There were even some weird cases in the 1980s or 1990s where men who wanted to share the experience actually were able to produce small amounts of milk with adequate stimulation (and, I suspect, a dose of hormones). But since she is aready a breast-feeding mother, all she needs is the extra nursing by the other babies to produce extra milk.

11. LOL. Sure can.
when I had my first child, I was told to feed her and then pump until empty. Well, you guessed it. I had enough milk to feed a third world nation and enormous TaTas.

Fortunately, a lactation consultant at the hospital corrected the nurse's mistake and it was fine from there.

38. Midlo, I was an over-producer also. I also
kept the enormous tatas for a couple of years after weaning my last one. At that point, I decided to have the reduction surgery. Insurance covered it. Haven't regretted it for even a moment. Back feels better, I'm sleeping better, clothes fit better, and I don't get the weird stares. It's nice to look like a normal woman again.

limit your ability to produce. As long as she is healthy and gets plenty of nutritious food and liquids, she will be able to produce plenty of milk.

46. It's an ancient Chinese secret
but, they have some sort of special soup that they make that involves pig's feet, soy sauce and other ingredients - I forgot exactly what else because my daughter is over 5 years old now.

But, after having this soup, my wife went from having enough milk for our daughter, to having enough milk for most of China.

19. Rose of Sharon.
"The the bearing of her stillborn child, however, brings about a change in her character. Her breasts are full of life-giving milk and with no child to nourish, Rose of Sharon chooses to reach beyond her own considerations for the first time. She offers her milk to a stranger, a man dying of starvation. With this act, Rose of Sharon comes to represent the full circle of human unity: Despite her own position of need, she is able to give life."

23. Many women are amazingly generous and giving of themselves. My sister, who always had a rich supply
of breast milk, was a long-term donor to the milk bank back in the 1980s, which provided breast milk for at-risk newborns and premies whose mothers, for whatever reason, could not provide milk for them. I believe they may have either discontinued the program or else are screening very fiercely now, since HIV can be passed through breast milk, but I do know that being able to help babies whose mothers could not provide breast milk for them was important to my sister, and she was grateful for the opportunity to do it.

I always admired my sister for her contributions and wished I were able to do the same, but my supply was always just enough for my own babies.

This young woman in China deserves honor and recognition for her efforts to help the most vulnerable victims of the disaster. Bless her.

for breastfeeding someone else's child while smoking, or taking prescription medications, or having a cold, or having the wrong diet, or.....

Injecting your bodily fluids into another human being without said human being's parents' permission would cause SOMEONE to go batshit crazy.

That said, I think this is a wonderful story, and she is a hero.

50. What a beautiful story.
In reverse, this reminds me of a movie that took place in Indonesia when the British were there and one officer had a relationship with a woman from there they had to flee because he shot another officer for hurting the native people. The woman had a baby and she had gone off for a while so the dad was there playing with the baby in water when the Brits arrested him with the baby. The people thought of him as a hero and heard he was coming down the river so the women along the way offered to feed the baby as they passed through. The mother watched her husband get arrested but she was prevented from going to them because she would've been killed. It was a very sad movie.
