2. I thought those were melanoma surgery scars...
...and I don't want to picture any scars that I can't see if he's not fully dressed.

9. Unrelated to those stupid t-shirts, he's pretty badly beat up.
He's got scars from botched "surgeries" in NV care, to say nothing of from the torture.

He also got fucked up pretty well when he crashed plane three, just before the NV got their hands on him.

27. perhaps this is unfair of me but I have to wonder what that does to a person's psyche
I don't mean to disrespect his service and the suffering he (or any soldier) went through but I can't help but wonder if we can really trust the stability of his mental health. How can any person not have serious emotional scars after being tortured like that? Can we trust his ability to have his finger on the nuke so to speak? For years my father speculated that we could never know whether the torture included "brainwashing" I don't know how real the whole concept of brainwashing is but in a world where Howard Dean yelling at a rally makes him unelectable with the label of "unstable" how the hell can we not question McCain's mental fitness for duty?

30. I honestly can't say. I don't really know. I do know that I would probably
not be a heroic John Wayne if it came to five and a half years of torture, with broken limbs on top of the rest of the hassles. I'd probably spend each and every day frantically talking to myself and trying to convince myself not to be "a disgrace" to my uniform, to remember my frigging Geneva training, to try to keep that at the forefront of my actions.... but I don't know how well I'd do. I do hand it to him that he performed as well as he did in that circumstance. Jesus, after a few weeks, plenty of people just give up. Five and a half years is a long damned time.

That said, I still don't care for his views on the issues at all. I don't go for his choice position, his national security views, his Supreme Court perspective, and a whole bunch of other matters as well. He's not HORRIBLE on the environment, but he isn't as good as he could be, either.

So, I guess I not only respect his service, but I acknowledge that he did a mentally VERY tough thing. I don't actually think his temper is anything new. I'm guessing he was an asshole in flight school and in the squadron, too. And maybe that time in the Hanoi Hilton actually hardened him--like Charlie Rangel says after his awful wartime experiences in Korea--"And I haven't had a bad day since!" And he MEANS it, too.

I don't even worry about the guy's age. Heck, his mother, and her twin sister, are ninety SIX. And healthy. I don't worry overmuch about his health, either. Despite his injuries, he apparently is a real "energizer bunny." He hikes, walks all over hell and tires out his aides, and except for the fact that he cannot do some things for himself that involve full use of his arms (comb his hair, adjust his collar, tie his tie, that kind of stuff) he isn't sickly. Even the melanoma biz doesn't worry me--I have no doubt he's at Bethesda every few months getting the once-over, and he should buy stock in sunscreen the way he uses it.

So, I'll call him Popeye, because he does remind me of the guy, and I'll make the odd snarky remark, but I just don't get into really ripping him up on age, appearance, that kind of thing--his five and a half years sort of give him a pass on those kinds of shots. I'd rather object to him because of his ideas. I just really don't like his views on the issues, and that's why I can't see him in the job. If he did make it, I'd hope that an overwhelmingly Democratic congress kept him in check, and I'd hope he nominated Supreme Court justices who were more "unknowns" than little Borkish clones.

He's not the best candidate of the three main ones running, and that's why he shouldn't win.

14. My sentiments exactly
well if those women are so hep on battle scars they can march their little butts down to the recruiting station post haste. The recruiters will see to it that they get some battle scars. Maybe even a body bag.

These girls are all about the physical. They couldn't deal with anything other than their superficial misconceptions about battle scars.

6. That's pretty sick. Do they dig, say, missing limbs, missing eyes, burns over a third of the body?
Or do they like a cute little "manly" scar that doesn't really affect the fellow's looks?

Does a sucking chest wound give them a thrill?

It's terribly inappropriate. It really is.

Who's dumb idea was that?

Or are they just wearing a stupid t-shirt and thinking they're doing something to help their country?

15. That picture truly is worth a thousand words
What horror for the young couple. How brave. And now needless.

And to think there are scars just as devastating that are on the inside. Stupid, stupid war.

29. Great avatar!
My sci-fi hating girlfriend started calling Galactica "Frakkin' Starbuck," and now that's crept to all the sci-fi I watch--Torchwood, which I'm currently running through, is now also "Frakkin' Starbuck."

28. They do... and here's proof.
Or do they pity them?

Those little shits with the T-shirts are the brainless-twit equivalents of chickenhawks. You know damn well they wouldn't soil their young bodies dealing with real wounded men.

I cry every time I look at this pic. I hate the fucking people that sent him to become this.
