Poll question: how likely do you think an attack on iran before * leaves office is?
just came back from the meeting of my ward dem party. -these guys were there, talking about trying to get city councils, and smaller units of government to go on record now opposing an attack on iran.
so, the question is- do you think an attack will be launched before 1-20-09?

(ps, if you are interested in working on this in your city, email them, or pm me and i will pass it on.)

Will anyone anywhere in our government or military be able to stop these insane bastards?

I don't know.

9. you know, they don't even want to include the word nuke.
but everyone in the room who thought they would was sure that it would be a nuclear attack. if not in the first round, then in the second.
who will be able to hide from that?

20. What was that phrase they used? Something like "tactical usable nuclear weapons"....
So-called "bunker busters" that rival the megatonnage of the bomb that flattened Hiroshima....

Cheney and his friends are insane, and I mean that in a clinical sense.

We are a long way from being home safe from this nightmare.

19. Well.....
Hillary has been pretty hardcore about Iran and Barak, while he talks rapprochement, still says Iran is a threat to the US.

There is no real peace candidate, only degrees of warmongering.

23. I don't know...
According to the map below, Iran is huge. We may have it surrounded, but that won't make it easy. Nor does it consider the reaction of the people living there. Or, how the Iranian leaders will react. Or how an attack will go over with the other peoples of other nations, or their leaders.

Blackwater may like it, but there's no evidence too many others will.

this is a question about the bush administration, and what they may do on their way out the door. the view from the reality based community may or may not have anything to do with it.

not been elected.

and as far as barack, not to turn this into a gd-p discussion, but is just can't see him being that stupid. i agree that he has made statements about the use of force that i would rather not hear from my candidates. but i also believe that "i do not oppose all wars, i just oppose stupid wars." is a statement that i can get behind, because i think he and i both believe they are pretty much all stupid.

Edited on Tue May-20-08 12:12 PM by Hydra
In fact, the powers that be will not allow a candidate that will stand in the way of ANY kind of military action.

They won't even talk about getting us out of Iraq.

Nope, Iran will get flattened at some point, as will Venezuela, unless we can steal control back.

The myth of a "kinder, gentler superpower" is a tired one. This is what superpowers do- they tell people what to do, and kill them if they don't.

17. no i do not think Bush will be attacking Iran.
Bush is arrogant and extremely stupid but even his advisor's understand Iran is not Iraq, Iran is huge compared to Iraq, the topography is far different and if he ever put ground troops in there they'd be more screwed than the troops in Iraq, Iran's population is triple that of Iraq's. The army is overstretched as it is and there is no way another ground invasion could happen in in the court of public opinion, americans are warred out.

I also don't think airstrikes will happen either.

It rallies the country against a fresh enemy and gets McCain elected.

24. I don't see it
Republicans are essentially cowards. They don't like to start shooting at
enemies who will shoot back. Iraq was a gross miscalculation (see Rumsfeld's
statement of Mov. 14, 2002). Republicans like to attack countries like
Grenada (Reagan) or Panama (Bush I). Places like Iran and North Korea would
shoot back. Plus, Iran has a large and healthy opposition movement, and just
about the only thing that would unite them with the conservative regime in
power would be to have us attack them.

An attack on Iran would need some serious preparation, and the mere hint of it
would bring about swift impeachment proceedings. The fact that our military is
so stretched out already would make our generals in the field scream, too. The
only thing we could effectively do is launch an air attack, which would get us
exactly nowhere.

again, the question was about the bush administration, which would include the insane dominionists that they have covered with the fruit salad, and their cult of gun toting minions ready to bring on the rapture.
fwiw, scott ritter was one of the witnesses at the hearing on this measure, and he felt that we had the forces to do it, and that we had generals who would do it.

i rarely beg. i rarely kick myself. but i really want people to see this.
ya know, when chicago led the way 5 years ago, nearly 300 cities and towns followed. we even had a resolution to impeach way back then. my alderman is a great, great democrat, and he led the way then. i think that this is a worthwhile effort. yes. i am pessimistic. but the people doing this believe that at least one good thing CAN come of it- we can tell the world, from down here on the ground floor, that this moron is STILL not our president.
so, can i get a little love for this?

you know, a lot of that was people setting up town meetings, and getting average people to come out and just call bullshit on the whole thing. i think that is basically what these guys want to do.
