My word! Sue Simmons is back on WNBC after grade-F slip

By Richard Huff
DAILY NEWS TV EDITOR

Wednesday, May 14th 2008, 4:00 AM

Veteran WNBC/Ch. 4 anchor Sue Simmons was back on the air Tuesday, a day after dropping an F-bomb on live TV.

The decision to keep her on by Ch. 4 management after the gaffe left some industry insiders mulling Simmons' future.

"She should be suspended for some period of time," said one local executive, who declined to be named.

Another called the mishap "inexcusable" for someone of Simmons' experience.

Simmons, seated next to Chuck Scarborough, dropped the offensive word Monday during a live news tease at about 10:30 p.m. Though she was off camera as a video clip appeared, she was heard saying, "What the f- are you doing?"

1. Who the fuck cares?
Are we so prudish that this is news? Sounds like some people are ready to tar and feather her and run her out of town.

3. They allow profanity on the air in the UK, and guess what - the world doesn't end.

4. Sounded like she apologized on the same broadcast, right after the break.
At least she pronounced and used it in a sentence correctly.

Something we can't say for Dumbya.

5. Wow! Sue Simmons is practically a NY institution! lol!!!! I want to know what the fuck Scarborough
was doing! She sounded really pissed off.

That said, I cannot understand in this day and age the outrage over the use of language over teevee. I watch on youtube a show out of the UK, Most Haunted. Every few months they have a live version and although they apologize they are always shouting out fuck and shit and do not get censored or censured for it. Why can't we just grow up???

9. Ahhh...The Fun Of Live...
I have a treasure trove of these stories from my many years playing around in the broadcasting world. When I began, I did a talk show with NO DELAY...just a quick trigger finger that sometimes wasn't quick enough. But the best ones are when something goes wrong behind the scenes or someone messes up a script (ala O'Reilly)...and "shit happens".

And open mike is the blooper collector's best friend...and now with YouTube, no one misses a good one.

17. In college, I used to have to remind people that the TV studio was full of open microphones...

... and that it probably wasn't the right place to gossip about the instructor being an alcoholic while, he was sitting in the control room with the monitors.

Also, we had some great bloopers on our directors' tracks.

"Give Neal more head," was my favorite. What she meant was, "Give Neal more headroom."

Also, "Nice crotch," when what was meant was, "Nice crotch-shot."

And then there's the time I was shooting an interview show project, and I had cut to "commercial" early and tell one of my talent that I'd sooner take an "f" for the exercise than allow him to keep sexually harassing the interviewer.

Unfortunately, I had been so absorbed in the technical minutiae of the exercise, that the actual words coming out of his mouth had been lost to me. Someone else had to point it out to me, or else I wouldn't have noticed. Unfortunately, I had let it go on far too long before actually doing something about it. But when I finally did, things got back on track quickly.

10. If only our congress would respond to the bu$h administration like that!
They should have done it a Long time ago.

Who turned the mike on? Why aren't they in trouble?

12. We can show killing, rape, and incredible violence on prime time TV.
But someone says a "bad word" and there's an uproar.

Koresh on a stick this country is FUCKED UP.

13. I'd like to know what the fuck Scarborough was doing
Most on-air people don't use that language for fear they'll use it on camera, so whatever Scarborough was doing must have been bad.

She sounded REALLY pissed-off!

Like maybe Chuck Scarborough had just tried to put his hand up her panties or something.

"What the fuck are YOU doing!?"

I used to watch Sue Simmons when I was a kid, and I know I would have been appalled if between the stories of car wrecks, house fires, shootings, sexual assaults and war casualties she had dared to utter a naughty word.

It would have warped my fragile little mind.

Just don't give Simmons a rifle and an old man to go shooting with.
