6 ways mushrooms can save the world

Mycologist Paul Stamets studies the mycelium -- and lists 6 ways that this astonishing fungus can help save the world.

The Pangea Day Mission & Purpose
Pangea Day is a global event bringing the world together through film.

Why? In a world where people are often divided by borders, difference, and conflict, it's easy to lose sight of what we all have in common. Pangea Day seeks to overcome that – to help people see themselves in others – through the power of film.

1. God bless the NOBLE Morel!!
We used to spend lots of time in the woods when my siblings and I were young. My brothers would take their shirts off and load them up with Morels. "Filet" them and a light cracker-meal and a little egg and WOW!!!

5. Sounds very cool, but I'd be too scared.
I watched Alton Brown's Food Network segment on mushrooms, and he had "Death," along with sickle, standing behind him, if he dared to gather his own mushrooms. You need to have a lot of skill, or so I've gathered.:scared:

I've never tried finding my own, though I did think of ordering a growing kit, but get mine from the market, as Alton Brown recommended, but when I was a kid, my Dad used to get "tree mushrooms," whatever they were, from his good friend, and they were wonderful! But he must have known what he was doing...

12. There's no mistaking a Morel. Mom and Dad told us about the poison ones, not to touch anything else.
We learned early to do what they said. Picked Morels for years and years - no trouble . . . . . . not even poison ivy and I can recall seeing maybe half-a-dozen ticks on someone at one point or the other in those years. We never even thought about that stuff, but we paid attention to what we were told about the mushrooms, maybe because there are such obvious differences.

23. Thanks for the feedback, but as much as I love mushrooms,
I wouldn't pick them for my table unless guided by your Mom or Dad, or my Dad's friend, Tony... :-)

25. I understand, my friend. I love mushrooms and have learned to cook with them,
but I don't know how to recognize them in the wild. I'd rather trust an expert, or a market, per Alton Brown. *sigh* I should probably grow my own, but my SO won't eat them, so I've taken to either eliminate them or prepare separate meals, which I have done. *sigh*

3. K&R. And one for the bookmarks...
Mushrooms are probably my favorite food, cook a lot and used to add them to practically everything, LOL. But my SO hates them, so I'll send him this thread, as he wants to help save the planet, to get him to stop discounting mushrooms! This was a very interesting video. Thanks! :hi:

11. I have heard this man speak at the Bioneers convention.
His research on fungi is nothing short of amazing. If you ever get the opportunity
to hear him speak, do it.

His work has lead to his life being threatened. Certain mushrooms are natural pesticides for
carpenter ants and termites. He presented his work at a convention for pesticide developers and pest exterminators. When he concluded his presentation an industry guy came over to him and warned him that he "better watch his back." Stamets now has cameras all around his secluded home.

Everything from restoring old growth forests to pesticides to ethanol. It gives me hope that human ingenuity combined with respect for mother nature can save our species.

26. Paul is a good friend, and his work impressive.
His site is fungi.com.

This was my high school science fair project in the 60s, producing food from coal.
His work is accomplishing just that, turning hydrocarbons into food.

32. This was absolutely amazing
Does Al Gore know about this man? What rock have I been living under to have never heard of him or his work. The implications are really mind-boggling.

I adore mushrooms (the lady at my local vegetable market in Brooklyn always called me 'mushroom lady')and I've often considered trying to grow my own especially after moving to FL and not finding much selection down here, but I had no idea of their benefits beyond the medicinal and culinary ones.

Thanks so much for posting this.

35. Great Video! I didn't realize until I looked it up that Paul Stamets is founder of Fungi Perfecti-
a great company here in the Pacific Northwest where you can buy all sorts of mushroom products. We have purchased the sacks that grow oyster mushrooms and my husband has a cool, Fungi Perfecti t-shirt.

just because it looked so fascinating. Haven't been able to do anything about it yet. Would love to have a rural home with a "secret mushroom cellar" built into the side of a hill, or some such. :)

46. mushrooms are fascinating stuff!
another interesting thing is that most cultures on earth are mycophilic. pretty much it's only the british who are actively mycophobic historically. and that's where we get a good portion of our fear and ignorance about fungi here in america. mycoculture has been well established in asia for centuries. they have some interesting catalogs for mycophiles to grow their own specimens and even their own food. one of the neater looking ones was a fungus from vietnam that grew to the size of a chair; there was a pic of a girl sitting in the cup of the mushroom, it was so big!

fun stuff!

But using them in or as a food instead of say...a protein based food will leave a whole bunch of us allergic folks kinda hungry.

I'm guessing, based on other things I've read, about that one use.

Anybody want to clue me in on the others?

48. Interesting talk.
There were a couple of points there where I kind of went "huh?". One was where he said that the earth developed us to form the internet, because that is like a version of the fungal internet.

But all in all, it was good. The guy is obviously brilliant in his field with some great ideas. I've been fascinated by fungus since I heard about the way they network right below the ground, it's amazing. Using nature, instead of 'conquering' nature, what a concept.
