Have you seen these signs at restaurants?
Edited on Fri May-09-08 06:52 PM by senseandsensibility
Yesterday I was entering one of my favorite restaurants in my town (Italian)--NO, not Olive Garden-- and what did I notice for the first time? There was a big placard on the wall stating that this restaurant serves food and beverages known to cause cancer. I had never noticed it before.

Do all restaurants have these? Have you ever noticed them? I've been in that restaurant countless times and never noticed it before, so maybe the signs are at all restaurants.

1. In California by any chance?
Don't have those in Minnesota. Here the restaurants have signs that say "Firearms prohibited".

4. LOL
Funny line about the firearms, and also funny that you could guess it was California.

31. It was my first guess, and I didn't even need to look at your profile.
I vaguely remember seeing signs like those in CA.

33. That's what I thought
Otherwise, why would you ask? You would just say I see you're from CA, or something.

Strange - I haven't seen a sign like that referring to beverages before.

10. Yeah, I read it carefully and it definitely said food and
beverages. I think I've seen warning signs for pregnant women and alcohol before, but nothing like this.

26. Sodium Benzoate, a preservitive in many soft drinks, along with
aspartame, are thought to be carcinogenic. I've also read that cooking meat produces some carcinogenic nitrates, however I don't have a link handy. Besides, almost everything will eventually kill you for some reason or another, so I wouldn't worry about it anymore than walking through a large downtown city.

They also put warnings on every product containing lead sold in California, even if the metal is in a form which would only hurt someone who licked it.

7. I must say I have NOT seen that...
Edited on Fri May-09-08 06:55 PM by Imagine My Surprise
I've seen signs indicating certain chemicals "known to cause cancer" blah, blah, but not a sign as blatantly linking cancer to a restaurant as the one you mention. Hmmm. And when I lived in CA, I saw signs like that everywhere.

8. Wow! I've not seen that.
I was surprised when I moved to NYC and the liquor stores and restaurants had signs that talked about the dangers of drinking while pregnant.

And then a few years ago the fucking asinine menu warnings about "undercooked" meats showed up, and I've seen those in every part of the country I've been in.

But I haven't seen any cancer signs.

15. Prop. 65, many years ago.
A right-thinking group, I forget who, got a proposition on the ballot to warn the public of potential chemical dangers. Like many propositions, it was poorly worded and the upshot was that anything that might possibly be considered hazardous ended up requiring a warning. The signs are now so ubiquitous that they have no meaning.

16. Prop 65 Warnings
To comply with Proposition 65, the warning sign must be 8.5 by 11 inches and posted in a "clear and reasonable" manner where food is served. This has been the case since 1986, by the way.

It reads: "Warning: Chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer or birth defects or other reproductive harm may be present in foods or beverages sold or served here."

Many seafoods are bad for pregnant and nursing women because of mrecury and such. So the warnings are not exactly as frightening as they seem.

17. Mommy Party tactics gone nuts
This is what happens when left side extremists get power.

This is why some Democrats get a bad name.

I have no idea where you are or who caused that sign to be there, but it really doesn't matter. We get blamed for it. Every time.

Do you recall when New Jersey outlawed SUNNY FUCKING SIDE UP EGGS?????

Yes, they outlawed undercooked eggs. Diner cooks (of which, there are more in just north Jersey than in the rest of the country!) were having to tell customers they couldn't have their eggs they way they wanted them. How does one say that without either laughing like a moron or getting spitting mad?

A Law Against Sunny Side Up Eggs.

That stupid fucking sign is from some fucking shit for brains with the same malformed gene in their head.

Don't be shy. Tell us how you really feel. Actually, the answer as to why the sign is there is up thread. I just can't believe this law has been in effect since 1986 in California, and I have never seen it before.

37. It's real
While a hospital patient in Virginia, I was informed, when filling out my menu for the next day's breakfast, that it's illegal for the kitchen to serve eggs with a runny yolk. Salmonella was cited. I offered to take the risk, but they wouldn't do it.

Finally, I was able to persuade a cook to cheat for me, and I got special breakfasts.

But, the law is on the books.

Edited on Sat May-10-08 11:24 AM by DesertRat
My 19 year old daughter was alarmed at those signs in all the park restaurants.
In AZ the signs are more along the lines of "Concealed Weapons Welcome Here".

I think there should be similar warning signs in restaurants that spray their salad greens with whatever that preservative is that causes almost instant diarrhea in lots of people, including me.
