Fuck the Burmese government
Edited on Fri May-09-08 06:10 PM by crispini
I can't believe these people are making it difficult for folks to get relief aid in there.

I am not REALISTICALLY advocating this, but to be perfectly honest, I would totally applaud if some OTHER government decided to just go in there with their boots and deliver aid anyway, and overthrow the damn government while they're at it.

This is stupid. Hundreds of thousands will starve and die of disease. This makes my heart hurt.

1. Watching BBC News. They stopped delivering aid because
government is closed for a three day holiday, something to do with the unveiling of their new constitution. They don't seem to care about those who might die of starvation, dehydration and various fevers that might plague the survivors. If there was ever a legitimate reason for invading a country, this would have to be it, but there's no profit in it so it won't happen.

7. I'm not that impressed with corporate or military power.
When the will of a people awakens, there is no might that can stop them. Witness Iraq.

9. One would think the common soldiers will lose faith now..
they're the only ones out there giving aid, or being allowed to. They've got to be frustrated and horrified over the whole thing.

10. True. Unfortunately the military generally leads
political change in the developing world.

4. It does remind me of the same inept handling of a disaster like Katrina
It is sicking to see the pictures and videos coming out of Burma.

11. I keep hearing about all these crack response teams..
that the U.S. military has waiting in the wings, and I keep wondering, where were they when Katrina struck, half-way around the world?

5. that's exactly their fear
Edited on Fri May-09-08 06:24 PM by maxsolomon
they're conducting a sham referendum on the new constitution, and would rather let 1000s more die & get sick than allow the rest of the planet to see what they have wrought.

if the UN decides to deliver the aid anyway, i don't know how effective the Myanmar government would be at stopping it - especially if some big guns were behind the effort - the US, China, India, and Russia combined?

may the burmese know freedom.

8. Agreed. Butchers and madmen...
this SHOULD be their ultimate un-doing. We can blame all of this ultimately on British Imperialism though.

12. PBS had a long report on Burma, too. So sad, but do you know
who and what many DUers connected to this travesty? Katrina, but on a massive scale... Maybe that government has ulterior motives, just like some here considered:

13. Coup!
Coups are always lead by Colonels or lower rank officers.....Colonel Muanmar Gadaffi, as an example. Most Generals are too corrupt in a regime like Myanmar. I agree....send in the Marines and crush them in 24 hours and then send the aid in...
