Bumper sticker seen on a pickup truck in Tacoma: "Liberty > Equality".
If that ">" is mathematical notation, then the sticker reads "Liberty is greater than Equality".

Has anyone ever seen this slogan anywhere? Know what it means? Is it a veiled expression of white supremacy?

I'm confused...

1. It had to be on a pickup truck.
Stereotype comes true.

2. The only time I ever ran into that expression
(mathematically speaking) was in the context of extreme Libertarianism ... which is virtually indistinguishable from anarchy. The strong should be free to dominate the weak or inferior, so the logic goes. Dressed up social Darwinism.

3. a friend of mine refers to that as Anarchy for Rich people
if you can afford the police and fire department and roads and other perks like clean water, then I guess it's easy to favor getting rid of those pesky things like infrastructure and taxes.

4. Yep. That's the basic idea
Anarchy for rich people. The regimen of the sweatshop or freedom of the underpass for the rest of us.

8. Nobody who has successfully navigated the perils of puberty
... cares much for Ayn Rand. :) She is the philosopher of the emotionally handicapped. Objectivism is merely a sophomoric attempt to provide a philosophical rationale for bestiality.

9. I'd be tempted to draw a line under that.
Liberty is greater than or equal to Equality. It would mess with their head.

11. Could be a reference to taxes for social programs
Edited on Tue Apr-22-08 09:01 PM by Juche
If you assume liberty = not being taxed for medicare, medicaid, social security or education and equality = wealth redistribution due to taxes for education, healthcare or senior pensions.

That would be my take on it, he is saying it is better to be free of taxation than to be taxed to pay for programs that promote equality. The guy who has it has probably collected 60-80k in education subsidies for k-12 or maybe college in his life and will eventually collect hundreds of thousands in social security and medicare.

12. lay off Tacoma
My daughter and her friends have organized a day of silence (in honor of LGBT teens who have persecuted due to their sexuality) tomorrow at her school, and Friday night, there is a Night of Noise to support a teen who was beat because she was thought to be gay, in Tacoma.
