6. It would restore workers’ freedom to choose a union

It’s Time to Restore Workers’ Freedom to Form Unions

America’s working people are struggling to make ends meet these days and our middle class is disappearing. The best opportunity working people have to get ahead economically is by uniting to bargain with their employers for better wages and benefits.

But the current system for forming unions and bargaining is broken. Every day, corporations deny workers the freedom to decide for themselves whether to form unions to bargain for a better life. They routinely intimidate, harass, coerce and even fire workers who try to form unions and bargain for economic well-being.

The Employee Free Choice Act (H.R. 800), supported by a bipartisan coalition in Congress, would level the playing field for workers and employers and help rebuild America’s middle class. It would restore workers’ freedom to choose a union by:

* Establishing stronger penalties for violation of employee rights when workers seek to form a union and during first-contract negotiations.
* Providing mediation and arbitration for first-contract disputes.
* Allowing employees to form unions by signing cards authorizing union representation.

(The above link has links to the actual bill and a summary)

8. some more info
as the law stands now, if a company fires someone for trying to form a union, that person's only recourse is to sue. This can take years, and if the company loses, the WORST penalty is they are forced to re-hire the person with back pay. This makes it very profitable for big companies to simply fire anyone who tries to form a union, then deal with the lawsuits.

This bill establishes real puntative penalties to companies who fire pro-union workers.

5. Fuck Boren
Edited on Thu Mar-01-07 05:01 PM by GTRMAN
I know Oklahoma is a place that might require a more conservative breed of Democrat than a lot of other places, but this is just bullshit. They duped this state into voting for their stupid "right to work" law back in '02 and having a job in this state has been an exercise in starvation ever since. The good employers packed up and moved out and the dregs moved in trolling for desperate workers. Wages have plummeted here.

Boren can kiss my ass as far as I'm concerned.
