I got laid off
on Thursday. The company I worked for (since the eighties) is laying off 300 people by the end of the year and about double that next year.

The jobs are going to India and China. I just don't see how things can continue this way for much longer without ruining this country.

2. Sorry to hear about that
Please make sure that you apply for unemployment payments. And then start calling family and friends to let them know that you lost your job and are looking.

And update your resume.

Make sure that you know where your expenses are going and see where you can make some cuts.

And if you can, get out and walk, get some exercise. Don't spend too much time in front of the computer or TV.

Good luck!

That really sucks. I am so sorry that happened to you. Better things in front of you, my friend ... but I know this really sucks.

5. That sucks...but will you get unemployment and retraining?
I hope so, if you need it or a new job! Maybe you should take a little
time to think about your options, after you apply for unemployment benefits.

10. I was lucky to get severance
and my husband and I are pretty close to retirement...My husband works at the same place and he is eligible at the end of this year for early retirement (and retiree medical). We're crossing our fingers that he makes it until then. My youngest starts college in two years so I'll probably have to get some kind of job to help out with that... I was thinking of applying to universities in the hopes of getting free or subsidized tuition-- I've heard some schools do that for the children of employees.

Harvard and Yale and a few others have tuition free; if the income is below $75,000.00 a year!

There are also grants available but apply on January 1st way before the September semester and

request work study too but do it early! Also look at scholarships. The kids can work too, you know! ;)

Sounds like you aren't on your own with this. Glad to hear that!

6. I'm so sorry -
and so furious that this is happening to thousands of Americans.

Hang in there -- do what you need to do, and we'll all work together to get a Dem in the WH and hopefully begin to turn things around.

7. Boooooooo! I'm so sorry. Why don't you tell us what you do and where you live and maybe we can
come up with some leads.

Makes all the campaign non-stories sound like the asinine diversions that they are. We parse words while people lose their livelihoods & lack health care coverage.

8. 2nd Best thing that ever happened to me
May you have the same good fortune! I created my current job and own my own life. Take days off to watch my daughter run track (coach the JH distance team) set my hours and pay where I want them, not where the HR department or a "boss" wants them.

9. The place I worked three years ago...
we got a visit from two programmers from Poland, who came to learn about the software system we were building. They spent a couple weeks learning how it all worked, and then went back to Warsaw. Next thing we know, one morning we were informed our jobs had all been shipped to Poland and our whole division was shut down.

We didn't even get two weeks severance pay. We were just shown the door.

Best of luck in finding something good.

your DU name, this news - will you be OK? Your earlier post leads me to believe you might be OK. I know how it feels to be laid off and as an IT worker I feel like I am always just hanging off the side of the boat :(
