Poll question: Beer vs. Wine. What is your preference? Beer has always been mine, but

I'm trying something different. And if you are a wine person, what am I missing?

2. Back in the good old days when I kid myself I could drink
I preferred a dark beer like porter or a dry white wine like a good Riesling.

I loathed lagers and sweet wines.

30. Ageing Sucks, Eh?
I used to like nothing better than a fine Cabernet Sauvignon, a pint or two of Guinness Stout, or a Jameson's and water.

Then I turned 40. Now, 15 years later, I drink a glass of red wine about once a year.

62. I became intolerant to alcohol in my 20s
The flushing reaction came through on a gene.

If I am stupid enough to drink (not true for over 30 years now), within 20 minutes my face turns beet red and I get a massive migraine--no party, just pain.

It's not worth it to try to fit in with the drinking crowd.

4. I make my own wine at home.
Tastes fantastic when it's aged, and in the meantime you have an acceptable plonk.

I like the very occasional beer on a hot day, but that's about it.

6. Go to a few wine tastings to establish your likes.
Mine tend toward full-bodied reds...cabernets, pinot noirs and zinfandels, mostly....can't stand merlots.

Something to try if you like sweet is port. There are two basic types, ruby and tawny. I prefer tawny.

7. Beer (not that I really drink either anymore)
I should probably drink wine moderately for all the health benefits, but it's hard to find wine without sulfites, and I'm allergic to that shit. Gimme a good organic microbrew any time.

8. Dry vermouth on the rocks. French is best. Italian is good, though.
Wine is a lot more interesting fortified. Nance finds it revolting, go figure.

Good beer, though, doesn't need to be tarted up to be a joy after a long day, or a 2 pm pleasure on a sunny day off.

18. I prefer red wine, it's the most compatible intoxiccant for my body chemistry.
I can drink red wine all night, and still get up in the morning
feeling bright as a daisy.

I leap out of bed to start the day!

BEER is my second choice- I can drink beer all night, but
I'll feel fine when I wake up around MID AFTERNOON.

I WANDER out of bed to start my coffeepot.

Strong spirits or white wine- bad news for Dick...
I drink those, I wake up the next afternoon feeling like hammered shit.

I CRAWL out of bed to start hugging my cool, soothing toilet bowl.

I don't know much about wine, 'cept I like the less sweet stuff. Reds and whites. Yellowtail or Lindeman's. I am fortunate to live near a beautiful vineyard, Viking Vineyards, that sells delicious wine.

As for beer, I stay away from any mainstream American beer. (Though I did prefer Miller High Life when I was in college.) Beers I enjoy are:

Tsingtao
33 Export
Kingfisher
Pilsner Urkel
Chekvar
Staropramen
Keo
Marathon
Athenian
Toohey's New
Cooper's
A beer that has an image from a Hieronymous Bosch painting whose name I can't remember. (Beer and painting.) On edit: Tillburg's Dutch Brown Ale and The Garden of Earthly Delights, respectively.
Steinlager
Baron's
Estrella
Moretti
Corona
Dos Equis (It's on sale this week, and so, is in the fridge.)
Great Lakes Brewery Christmas Ale on tap
Red Stripe
Samuel Smith Nut Brown Ale
Hobgoblin
Boddington's
Harp
Bass
Guiness
Beamish
Fuller's ESB
Murphy's
Young's Luxury Double Chocolate Stout (Actually, anything from Young's is good.)
Lion

Not a fan of white beer.

I usually bring tequila when traveling. Just took some Herradura to Pittsburgh last week.

Lately, I've been on a vodka kick. Absolut Pepper makes great bloody mary's. I tried Stoli Vanilla on a whim and was pleasantly surprised. Stay away from Skyy Vanilla. Truly awful.

I can drink beer just about all day, but I'm only good for a glass of wine with dinner. It puts me to sleep. Champagne gets me hammered. Never mix beer & champagne (or sparkling wine!)

53. They're not at all interchangeable.
Beer is refreshing for many. It is a largely male-consumed beverage that can be, but is usually not, consumed with meals.

Wine is a slightly female-leaning beverage (about 56-44) that is mostly consumed with food.

I've worked in the wine and spirits business for years, and the "trade-off" between wine and beer is a myth, IMO.

58. Dark beer only. The darkest of dark.
Waiters are learning the "Killians" is not an answer to "What kind of dark beer do you have?" Pink is not a dark color.

There are good beers that are not dark -- Sam Adams and a few micro brews come to mind. But the best stuff are beers like Black Angus Stout and Samuel Smiths Oatmeal Stout. When I'm shopping for new beer at a liquor store, I hold the bottle next to the light in the cooler; if any light passes through the beer at all, it goes back.
