Tweety: I'm a free man starting next June
Edited on Wed Apr-09-08 01:57 PM by DainBramaged
The middle of the article delves into the "whip-tongued, name-dropping, self-promoting wise guy"'s past: hitchhiking in Africa while in the Peace Corp, running for congress in 1974, penning a column for the San Francisco Examiner in the '80s.

It also notes who gave Matthews his first show, "In-Depth," on an "obscure network" called America's Talking — Roger Ailes.

Still some passages show the growing divide at MSNBC with Keith Olbermann as the face of the network: "NBC executives have been promoting him heavily, and three network officials asked me why I was writing about Matthews and not Olbermann," writes Leibovich.

But the conclusion of the article questions what Matthews will do next. "I have a lot of options," he says. "I'm a free man starting next June."

Leibovich raises two possibilities: taking over for Bob Schieffer when he leaves CBS' Face the Nation, or running for the Senate in 2010.

Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out Tweety. Oh, and clean your spittle off the camera lens.

There's a line, and he doesn't see it.

I think their savior is Dave Gregory.

16. We like it now when Keith
puts it to Bush and company.

But,, how will he be perceived with a Democratic administration in power??

If he is uncritical then he will in a very short order get a reputation as being nothing but a toady and lap dog for the current Democratic administration.

If he continues to be independent and critical about that which he sees as BS than he risks annoying the base that up to know thinks he for the most part can do no wrong.

Either way he can not win.

Should be interesting to see how it all shakes out.

18. He's critical of people deserving of criticism
For instance yesterday's worst person in the world was a Democrat, and he destroyed her.

He has always operated like that. I'm not worried that he'll go easy on a Democratic executive, quite the contrary.

Molly Ivins did it pretty well... she simply told the truth couched in humor, regardless of any R's or D's qualifying the victim.

36. He seems to be a pretty down the middle criticizer to me.
When Clinton was in office he didn't halt criticizing HIM when he thought he was wrong, and that Dem in the Ill. (State House or Senate) was slammed pretty hard. I've also hear Keith severely reprimanding the New Dem Congress for their lack of a spine.

I like my news unbiased, thanks. It's a more adult perspective. I don't need a cheerleader. Or an exhorter. OR a party-dividing over-eager scold.

I don't like to be "told" what to think by "personalities."

If I want "personality" there are plenty of those in my family and neighborhood.

I miss Walter Cronkite.

contract. I see a more liberal media rising after most of the companies are coming to the conclusion that trying to be FOX News clones is backfiring on them. Anybody who didn't watch "Boston Legal" last night missed a courtroom speech from the Alan character (James Spader) who lamented that we today have RW and LW news. He bemoaned the days of Cronkite, Huntley and Brinkley, et al, who brought us "The News". It was so right on. I hope that maybe the trend is to get back to those days when news reporting was unbiased based on the principle of bringing current events to the public to keep them informed with a zealous attempt not to bring opinion and bias into it.

20. When You See Your Salary In Print...
I was once told by a boss that if you see your salary in print, good chance its your boss whose putting it out there...either because they feel they're not getting their money's worth or to embarass the target (or both). Tweety's star has been falling at the network for a while as he's made a couple of messes the network has had to clean up. There's surely little love lost between Timmeh and Tweety thanks to Plamegate and it takes all of Olbermann's srength not to verbally smack Tweety around when he says yet another stupid thing.

The political winds have changed...and its taking the beltway longer to notice it than the beancounter in New York. MSNBC's ratings and revenues are on the rise in a time when most others are seeing the opposite. It's not Tweety whose making this happen...and it's not the "usual suspects" either...it's going after the "other side"...divorcing itself from a lot of right wing baggage and coming off as the alternative to Faux.

The irony is that Tweety will not go unemployed long. The beltway takes care of their own...kinda like how sports recycle the same managers over and over...its assumed that since you've been part of the game, you must remain part of the game.
