KO is covering the Brigadier General complaint re "24" story!
Edited on Wed Feb-28-07 08:33 PM by annabanana
Last week I read here that West Point (I think) was asking FOX to stop the "torture gets results" habits of the show "24" because of its effect on their students..

I'm glad to see KO is covering it.

2. Don't those idiots know
that TV shows are seen all over the world, and that this torture gives the impression that the US condones torture? If any US serviceperson is captured and tortured, "24" should be held liable.

3. "24" should be held liable" ?
and I guess Freddy Kruger should be held liable for every slasher murder in the last 20 years.

Do you hear yourself?

7. Oh forgive me
Of course people in the Middle East who support terrorism know the difference between fact and fiction, and the fact that a US TV show is showing US forces torturing is not anywhere near what actually has happened, right? And of course they will never ever use this footage to say that it shows that the US does indeed condone torture--because of course Gonzales never ever said that torture methods could be used -- only death or near death torture was out of bounds. :sarcasm:

Why do you think the military is concerned about this show? Or are they simply looney like me?

LOL...

I don't know...you tell me... Ohhh I get it...they don't want anybody to think that we condone torture.

But don't we? and don't they er torture.

What---it's gonna take a 1 hour TV show to convince the world we torture prisoners?

too fucking funny.

10. The pro-torture BS that "24" pushes onto people isn't okay. I think we agree.
Yeah, they can legally put it into a fantasy show. But they can't ethically put it into that fantasy show. It just isn't true that torture helps. And "24" promotes that fantasy.

13. what you said
and, let's face it, a picture is worth a thousand words--and a TV show is worth even more. I can very easily see 24 used as a recruiting tool by terrorists.

9. They should also send
Sutherland to the Intel School at Fort Huachuca, AZ to tell them. That's where the interrogators are trained.

11. They should focus on "Criminal Minds" and see how they really get information
from a suspect. I think it is fascinating. Of course it relies on intellect rather than brute force. "24" is obviously going for brute force over intellect. Maybe it says something about their audience or about their producers. Sort of like comparing "The price is Right" to "Jeopardy" The "24" crowd in right in their with "The price is right"

12. The interesting thing about 24 is that at least the last two seasons
have had comments in the script that torture doesn't work -- that the toritured will say anything to make it stop. That point has been made over and over on the show over the last two seasons.

I would hope people in other countries know the difference between a tv show and the real thing. Now if someone manipulates the show so it looks like the real thing, that is sad, but if it wasn't this show, it would be some other video they concoct.
