I’m no math genius and anyone who knows me has seen me transpose numbers, mis-apply algebraic formulae and generally mangle the multiplication tables but the numbers just don’t work out.
The Department of Defense says there are 23,000 non-mortal combat injuries from Iraq and Afghanistan. The VA says they are treating 200,000 veterans from those theaters and the Army Times reports a 400,000 case backlog at the VA. 1.5 million troops have served in those two conflicts and the DOD estimates that 10% will suffer brain injuries (the VA has just announced plans to screen every vet in their system for those injuries). That’s 150,000 casualties right there. So why is the DOD only claiming 23,000 casualties? I guess it’s because it might alarm the populace if they knew it would cost ‘bout a $billion to treat them over the next 40 years.
I guess it’s like everything else about this Administration. When the going gets tough the tough get creative with the numbers. Like the unemployment figures; it takes 100,000 new jobs a month just to cover growth in the labor market. Just about every segment of the economy has had major lay-offs and new job creation is just over 100,000 a month yet we’re told the unemployment rate is 4%. How can that be? Maybe they’re counting the jobs created in India and China.
The same goes for the balanced budget the Bushkovites promise by 2012. That promise is based on exaggerated economic growth and severe cuts to everything from Medicare to Veteran’s benefits AFTER BUSH LEAVES OFFICE. Right up to the end of 2008 Bush is spending like a drunken sailor on shore leave in Jamaica and leaves the hard work for his successor. Someone should tell him that doesn't count toward being a Navy veteran.
I’m not sayin’ that they’d lie to you . . . well, yes, I guess I am but then that shouldn’t be a big surprise at this point. You can always tell when they’re lyin’. Their lips are movin’.
