The City Manager of my town is being fired over a sex change
LARGO - City commissioners ended one of the most tumultuous weeks in Largo history Tuesday night by moving to fire City Manager Steve Stanton following his disclosure that he will have a sex-change operation.

A total of 480 people packed City Hall for a four-hour meeting during which one activist was arrested after police told her not to hand out fliers.

After listening to about 60 speakers, mostly from Largo, a majority of commissioners said they had lost confidence in Stanton's ability to lead.

"His brain is the same today as it was last week," Commissioner Gay Gentry said. "He may be even able to be a better city manager. But I sense that he's lost his standing as a leader among the employees of the city."

1. I wonder what percentage of those who turned out vote and are actively involved
in civic affairs otherwise....

Are there other extenuating circumstances that contributed to such a furor?

I'm just sitting here shaking my head.

2. I was just about to post this. I'm disgusted.
"I do not have any doubt that Mr. Stanton can still do the job," Commissioner Gay Gentry said. "But it seems that he's lost his standing as a leader among the employees of the city."

Commissioner Andy Guyette said, "I feel I can no longer trust his judgment."

Commissioner Mary Black requested Tuesday's meeting and offered the resolution to end Stanton's contract "in the best interest of the city." Black said Stanton's disclosure of his impending sex change "has caused stress, turmoil, distraction and work disruption to our city employees."

Morons. Bigoted fucking morons.

4. As long as the surgery does not interfere with his
duties and he continues to do his job to the best of his abilities, this surgery should not matter to anyone....

5. Imagine their shock if he had just shown up as Stephanie
after a prolonged absence! They had to know this was going to occur, though. Don't people have to go through some pretty extensive psychological stuff before having sex change operations?

I wonder if he has any recourse to sue for discrimination.

6. I had a feeling this was going to happen.
This area is way too conservative to have any compassion.

7. I hope Stanton wins a bundle in the lawsuit
This is discrimination, pure and simple. Firing someone over a documented medical condition is against the law, isn't it?

8. Interesting.
My father lives in Largo. I haven't talked to him for a few weeks - it'll be interesting to hear what he has to say.
