Sean Penn: ‘End Is Near’ for Fox Pundits

Penn: ‘End Is Near’ for Fox Pundits
Posted on Mar 20, 2008

Filming one of his last scenes as Harvey Milk, San Francisco’s first openly gay politician, who was assassinated by City Hall colleague Dan White in 1978, Sean Penn got all Method on the crowd of extras assembled to reenact the scene of an important speech Milk made on Gay Freedom Day 30 years ago.

Penn, who apparently requested to be called Harvey during the shoot, urged the couple thousand extras gathered in front of City Hall to come out to their families, and then capitalized on the momentum of the moment to impart a message that clearly came from the actor himself:

SFGate:

A production assistant followed Penn around the front of City Hall with a large navy blue umbrella. She held it over his head to shield him from the sun. Seeing he had a captive audience, Penn broke loose of the umbrella to deliver an impromptu speech that Milk would have loved.

“I almost wish Jerry Falwell were alive to see this. Almost,” Penn shouted to the crowd. After dropping some names of conservatives who are still with us—“Bill O’Reilly, who is too stupid to talk about,” and “Sean Hannity, the butt boy of Rupert Murdoch”—Penn said, “We know something more. We know their end is near.” ......(more)

5. I sat at a counter next to Penn the other day, eating cheeseburgers.
Had no idea who he was.

We were talking about Iraq and Boosh.

Evidently, he lives here in Town.

Funny guy.

I thought maybe he worked in construction or something, but he's kind of small.

19. Yes he did.
Then he committed suicide shortly after his release.

He served five years of a seven year sentence.

If you have not seen The Times of Harvey Milk, please do so. I would recommend seeing it before you see the Penn movie. It is an award winning documentary. At the time this film was made, Dan White was still alive.

The guy I loved in the movie was the blue collar union guy who began to work with Milk. At first, he did not want to work with all those "queers and nuts." He came to respect and love Harvey Milk and was not afraid to admit it.

18. Mr. Penn....
....is one of the best we have and we could use his talents elsewhere....

....if that jagoff raygun could mumble his way to the presidency, why couldn't the vastly superior Mr. Penn become president?....he speaks the truth; I'd vote for him....

20. The problem is that like Clooney, he has such magnificent talents as an actor...
... and other creative parts of the filmmaking profession too, which we also desperately need as a part of our overall solution to take back America.

Kind of like many of us who would like someone like Thom Hartmann running for office too. But him doing so would take him out of the talk radio arena, which I think he is the absolute best person on the air now. In the case of Al Franken, he's been a good comedian, and a reasonable radio host, but he's not as essential in the radio sphere as Hartman is, and I think will be a very decent senator for us in Minnesota.

If at some point Penn's career stalls in show business, which I think Reagan's certainly did, then I'd really like to recruit him to work in politics too, and I bet he'd get a damn good following. Same for Clooney (though from the sounds of it after one of his relatives had lost a hard fought campaign, Clooney sounds like he doesn't want to touch running for office now). Maybe even Angelina Jolie too. She certainly has a good foundation of stances and perspectives in many things she's done recently, though I'm sure she's got a number of good successful years ahead of her in the film business. Janeane Garafallo might come out and do something sooner than that.

Always a top notch actor as well as outspoken dissident. Anybody see him in The Assassination of Richard Nixon?
