And the $42 million "Your Check Is In The Mail" Notification just got more expensive.
I just heard on the local news that the majority of the notices will not feed through the automated mail sorting machines. So, they will need to be sorted by hand.
I did receive mine today. What an utter waste. $42M? I would rather that money (our money) had been spent on the many veteran's who could use help.
1. I watched the congressional hearing the other day
and the end result was that this was the best option of a bad situation.
The only other option (due to the exponential increase in phone calls, during tax season) the IRS had was to take people off of tax collections and put them in the phone bank. They saw a huge surge in phone calls after the refund in (2003?), and hoped the mailing would reduce that.
It would have cost more to pull people off of collections than the mailing.
Of course the economic absurdity of the refund is a whole different issue. The fact is it probably shouldn't have been done at all.
