3. I agree with you 100%
I used to be pro-death penalty, but hearing stories like this about possibly innocent people facing execution changed my stance.

4. Yeah I'm not so much against it on principle
But honestly it's proven not to be a deterrent and I'd rather save 1 innocent man than kill 1,000 guilty men.

6. Same here
I'm not opposed to the concept so much as appalled by the injustice of its current application. We need to stop for a decade or so, take a breather, and figure out if there's really an acceptable way to do this.

5. Oh, what a surprise. He's "black" and he killed ONE person.
Sorry, but someone had to say it.

Don't get me wrong, murder is wrong, but Georgia is notorious for putting poor people and "black" people in prison here by under funding the indigent defense programs. And I can't remember the last time a "white" person got the death penalty for less than triple murder.

The Georgia "justice system" isn't as bad as it was in the 1950s and 1960s, but it's still bad and getting worse, thanks to the Diebold Corporation.

7. The victim's race generally has more bearing than the defendant's
Killing a black person gets you 25 years. Killing a white person gets you a needle. That's why there are vastly more white people on death row than black people.

8. Kicked, Nominated and bookmarked
I've moved back to Georgia from San Francisco almost a year now and couldn't bring myself to get rid of the Golden Gate Bridge avatar. This post finally woke me up why I need to accept the fact that I live and vote here now, hence the new avatar and updated profile. I'm categorically opposed to the death penalty in all cases on principle and on practicality. I don't know what I might do, but I need to look into getting involved.
