At least 100 killed in Tibet unrest: Reports

Unconfirmed sources claim that at least 100 people have been killed in Tibet where the situation continues to spiral out of control after the Chinese crackdown on Tibetan protestors on the 49th anniversary of their uprising against Chinese rule.

What Beijing does next is being watched closely by the international community particularly since the Olympics are around the corner.

Lhasa's still burning despite the curfew imposed by the Chinese government after Friday's crackdown by the Chinese police on Tibetans demanding that the Beijing Olympic Games be cancelled.

The protests were also timed to mark the 49th anniversary of their uprising against Chinese rule.

The Tibetan government in exile claims at least 100 people could have died so far but the figure is impossible to verify.

China's violent reaction to what began as peaceful protests has evoked global condemnation.

WASHINGTON (AFP) — The United States dropped China from its list of the world's worst human rights violators, but added Syria, Uzbekistan and Sudan to the alleged offenders in an annual report released Tuesday.

The State Department's 2007 Human Rights Report showed China, which has raised hopes it will improve human rights by hosting the 2008 Olympics, had parted company with countries like North Korea, Myanmar and Iran.

No reason was given for removing China -- which has been a key partner in talks with Washington to denuclearize North Korea -- from the list, but the new report said China's "overall human rights record remained poor" in 2007.

In its report, the State Department said 10 "countries in which power was concentrated in the hands of unaccountable rulers remained the world's most systematic human rights violators."

8. This story really breaks my heart

As a member of the Campaign to Free Tibet movement, this has been a sensitive issue with me for years and years now--and one that too many people overlook.

The futile and pointless aggression is so sad. The world needs more Buddhists, not fewer.

China's efforts to demonize the Dalai Lama would be hysterically funny were it not all so upsetting, and the consequences of the violence so grave.

"Today there are army everywhere. There is no way to go and come. We are confined to our own homes," one Tibetan man in Lhasa told RFA's Tibetan service.

"Every Tibetan is stopped, and their IDs are checked," another source said. "Even Tibetan government workers are checked, but the Chinese are free to move around. Many Tibetans who were arrested were taken to Toelung and other jails in different parts of Lhasa."

20. Why the f* did China get the Olympics?

I hate to think of all the money pouring into Chine while the Olympics are going on. The Olympics should have been set in a country trying to make life better for its people not this authoritarian human rights violators.
