"Why would I care if someone taps my phone? I haven't done anything wrong"
I think I have found the solution to the vexing problem of domestic surveillance; wire tapping as we have come to call it. As luck would have it we already have a reasonably effective Government program in place which could be easily adapted to address this national concern.

What we need is a "No-tap" number similar to the tele-marketing "No-call" number. The Government should set up an 800 number that citizens (sorry, this program is just for 'real Americans') can call into and give their phone number and E-mail address to sign up. After doing that the Government could not tap into either of those streams of communications without a warrant. For those who don't called in, the ones that don't mind their phones being tapped or all of their E-Mail and internet postings to be monitored, well, theirs will be.

See, nothing to it.

1. It's the same logic gun control advocates ask us to accept.
"Why would you care about longer background checks, waiting periods and a database of your medical history? You don't have anything to hide do you?"

It's equally silly either way.

3. Point taken ... and I will certainly remember that argument, its beautiful
And I might note, most of the people who I've heard say they wouldn't mind being tapped are also gun owners (as am I) who would be shook to the bone by a long waiting period for a through check before buying a new bullet launcher.

10. Everytime someone mentions to me
that they don't care about wiretapping, I coolly remind them that one day we will have a democratic president. It usually shuts them up, because most that believe that are freepers.

2. These are the same
f*cks that said - I don't care if I'm patted down at the airport - I'm not carrying anything!

They don't have a clue!

4. but then we would be where we are today. Not being able to trust the government to do as they say
or are directed by law to do. I say stop this assault on our constitional rights and everyone will be fine. Even with our number listed on the do not call list some calls still make it through. Laws for the most part are for the law abiding citizens as most crooks have no qualms with breaking them. Other than taking a toke from time to time I haven't broken any laws in years. The only thing in my life that I would like to have that so far I haven't had is a government I can truly believe in.

5. "I saw a movie about bad guys who wanted to blow up the White House"
Edited on Sat Mar-15-08 08:53 AM by C_U_L8R
Say you've got "nothing to hide" and have only the most innocuous innocent conversations.
With a little illegal and unregulated wiretap and a quick cut and paste, you're adhoc movie review instantly becomes a terrorist threat...
snip snip snip "blow up the white house"
and bingo bango bongo... you're blackhooded and rendered off to Diego Garcia or some other CIA hellhole.
Unimaginable?

6. A "No Tap" registry
has about as much chance of NOT being abused as a candy bar surviving while in plain view at a diet clinic. This Government would love for everyone to simply sign up giving them a effortless list of numbers. With Bu$hCo in charge they would likely be the first ones tapped.

9. Yes, anyone signing up for "Do Not Tap" is obviously trying to hide something
and they should be investigated immediately.
