Down Goes Telcom Immunity
Edited on Fri Mar-14-08 01:21 PM by KharmaTrain
The House just passed their revised FISA bill WITHOUT immunity...a big loss to this regime. Congrats to House Democrats...Nadler, Conyers, Reyes, Hoyer and others for standing up for our liberties and finally showing some spine.

:applause:

On Edit: I hope now those court cases can move forward...the real victory in this vote!

19. It Shouldn't Matter
This is a major wrench being thrown at this regime. The House bill (without immunity) is different than the Senate bill (with immunity)...and since they're different now the House & Senate will have to meet...in "conference" to hammer out the differences and then go at it again. This could mean sending the House version back to the Senate where it probably won't pass there...and if it is, it will be vetoed. Or it could mean starting all over again.

In either case, the House will go into pro-forma session for two weeks in a few hours and the chance of a FISA bill being passed this year looks in real bad shape.

The question I'm curious about is if this vote is sufficient for courts to move forward with the pending cases against the telcoms...if they do, then the truth about the depth of the wiretapping and invasion of American privacy will come to light. This could be a very big vote.

23. Need an update: doesn't the bill make spying legal without granting
retroactive immunity? Doesn't it allow the WH to bypass the FISA court more often going forward? Doesn't it give more power to a rogue administration that's proven itself criminal and unconstitutional already on dozens of other counts? Doesn't it undercut our right to security in our homes and papers?

So how much of a victory is this? Does anyone care to predict that GWB will sign the bill without immunity so as to continue spying (legally, now) on our emails and phone calls under the guise of fighting terrorism?

I personally will find it more of a victory if the WH doesn't sign the bill due to the immunity poison pill and the whole thing fails. They simply need to follow current law and get court approval shortly after wiretapping.

32. Contacted his office...
no official response was forthcoming. My guess is that the bill was too lenient in its wording in protecting the citizens with regard to surveillance. Again, just my guess.
