Vatican official: New sins on horizon

From Jennifer Eccleston
CNN

ROME, Italy (CNN) -- Fifteen hundred years after the Roman Catholic Church introduced the original list of seven deadly sins, a Vatican official last week suggested an updated roster for a new age.

<snip>

In the 21st century, he said, "You offend God not only by stealing, blaspheming or coveting your neighbor's wife, but also by ruining the environment, carrying out morally debatable scientific experiments, or allowing genetic manipulations which alter DNA or compromise embryos."

<snip>

In his L'Osservatore interview, Girotti said pollution and genetic engineering, as well as drug dealing, abortion, pedophilia, social injustice and extreme wealth were now on record as mortal sins, those the Church deems most offensive to God and those that could land you a spot in hell without repentance.

<snip>

Addressing Girotti's confession refresher course, the pontiff lamented what he called "a certain disaffection" with the sacrament within his flock.

1. Hmm, I don't recall God having much of an opinion...
...about DNA in the Bible. He's similarly silent on genetic engineering, stem cell research, and "scientific experiments" in general.

That being the case, I wonder where Ratso is pulling his material from. His ass, presumably.

2. His list is rather interesting
though the DNA manipulation is a clear link to stem cell

Some of them though (extreme wealth) have been part of the original list for evah!

Well, I guess he's like to take the church back to the 14th century... sadly he is not alone... as his fellow fundies from multiple religions are afraid of the modern world

3. Mixed bag here
Ruining the environment, social injustice, pedophilia, extreme wealth... looks like most of the repukes are going to hell.

The abortion thing is no surprise from these sexists.

But "morally debatable" scientific experimentation? Who determines what is morally debatable? The church used to consider it a sin to study the human body. What a laughable criterion for a mortal sin -- the existence of a "moral debate" surrounding an activity.

Incidentally, was this reporter deliberately assigned to this particular story because of her name? :hide:

4. Some of that isn't so bad.
At least he's speaking out against environmental destruction and GMO organisms. I don't agree with the anti-stem-cell stance, but I'm happy to hear some of the rest. It's about time the major religions got away from the idiotic "have dominion over the earth" crap that has brought the planet to the brink of ruin, though they still have a long way to go before they accept a true harmony with life and recognize humans as just one species among millions, no more significant in a universal sense than any other.

5. Frankly, he should have rolled out the new line in September
Spring is the wrong time for new sins. It's the time for old sins.
