2. The war he had with John Glenn in the Ohio Democratic Senate Primary in the 70's was brutal..
Edited on Thu Mar-13-08 10:06 AM by ReformedChris
It was thermonuclear war against each other and they didn't talk for years. It also dinged up Glenn's star enough to cripple Glenn's much desire presidency (Glenn was very very close to JFK and RFK). Metz was a hell of a democrat and I wish him the best in his next life. RIP and Godspeed Senator!

3. It hurt them both, a lot. I'm glad they reconciled in the end.
But I must say I liked Metzenbaum's style more than Glenn's. Glenn's a good Democrat, but Metzenbaum's a scrapper, and knew how to fight. Shouldn't have picked a fight with Glenn, though.

Some relevance to today's campaign?

4. True...people shouldn't think that the battles of today are anything
new.

6. Glenn really went to bat for him when the RePuke Smear Machine said Metz was "Soft on Child Porn".
That "soft on child porn" charge was something a young Karl Rove must have studied. It was a brual comment and one that was disgusting even by RePuke Smear Machine standards. Im glad they reconciled to the point where they could work together. Metz tried to help Glenn's floundered 84 presidental run. Metz was a bulldog and a fighter, but Glenn was more of a talker and deal maker. It is revelant to today's campaign, Democrats can't afford to declare all out war against each other or there will potentially be consequences down the road. These two declared all out war and they were both damaged nationally.

Im gonna catch heat for this, but I think Glenn had the best chance to beat Reagan in 84 if his campaign didn't fall apart. He came from the midwest, was a hero, and was a solid talker. Gary Hart made that stupid comment in a debate about looking into the cockpit of a Soviet plane to see if they were wearing uniforms and Glenn shot him down instantly. I liked all the democrats in that race but I will always think highly of Senator Glenn
