Teacher (Mills High School) arrested on drug charges in taping probe (videotaping girls in restroom)
New meaning to Leslie Heimov's notion that "being in a place daily where they would be observed by people who had a duty to ensure their ongoing safety."

(03-11) 12:49 PDT MILLBRAE -- A Millbrae high school teacher has been arrested on drug charges in an investigation sparked by allegations that he secretly videotaped girls by using cameras in a campus bathroom, authorities said Tuesday.

David Lista, 35, an English teacher at Mills High School, was booked on suspicion of methamphetamine possession Thursday by Millbrae police after officers searched his Belmont home, authorities said.

Lista posted $10,000 bail on Friday and is to appear in San Mateo County Superior Court in the drug case April 8.

Lista's classroom closet area is next to the restroom, authorities said. A videotape of activity in the restroom was discovered when a campus employee began investigating why the school's computer server was overloaded, said David Miller, superintendent of the San Mateo Union High School District.

A California appeals court ruling clamping down on homeschooling by parents without teaching credentials sent shock waves across the state this week, leaving an estimated 166,000 children as possible truants and their parents at risk of prosecution.

But Leslie Heimov, executive director of the Children's Law Center of Los Angeles, which represented the Longs' two children in the case, said the ruling did not change the law.
