Surgeon Finds New Way To Fight Lung Cancer
Surgeon Finds New Way To Fight Lung Cancer

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Lung cancer kills six-times as many people as breast cancer each year. In many cases, the cancer is discovered late and is often hard to treat.

Recently a Mount Carmel doctor performed what may be the first operation of its kind: outpatient surgery to treat lung cancer, 10TV News reported.

The surgery was performed by Mount Carmel cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Dennis Tishko and took less than 10 minutes.

...

Instead of major surgery to remove the tumor, Tishko slipped a new kind of miniature camera into Medors' lung through a single slit one inch wide.

The surgeon them removed the tumor, and the lobe that it was growing on, 10TV News reported.

2. I was hoping they'd try laparoscopic surgery for that one
Traditional thoracotomies are one of the nastiest surgeries out there with a huge, painful incision and a need to cough frequently post op to prevent complications like pneumonia.

3. My dad had kidney cancer last year...
and had a kidney removed laparoscopically. 'Bout a 3 inch incision, and a fairly speedy recovery.

I'm constantly amazed at the advances made by medical scientists.

4. The laporascope was one of the biggest and best, IMO
because I remember how utterly appalling a lot of the old surgeries were with those huge incisions and how long the recovery period from them was.

A lot of my post op laporascopic patients didn't even ask for pain medication, not so much as a Tylenol.
