I have two nieces who are mixed race but who would be identified
under America's one drop rule as black. When I worry about their future, I don't worry about how they will be treated because they are female. I worry about how they will be treated because they are black.

2. Worry more about how they'll be treated as women
because sexism runs one hell of a lot deeper than racism. It's longer standing and more pernicious.

I've had a lot of conversations with friends of color about how a lot of the stuff they were calling racism happens to white women, too.

That doesn't deny there is racism, there certainly is, and I see it every day when some clerk tries to wait on me ahead of my brown and black sisters even though they've waited longer for service and in the stories of black friends who've been stopped for DWB in the "wrong" part of town.

It's just that sexism is the deeper and more pervasive evil. It holds our wages down while charging us double. It denies us reward and recognition of what we do as the real work of the human race, bearing and training the next generation as citizens. It puts us in physical danger even in our own homes, both from male companions and strangers breaking in. It makes us afraid whenever we go anywhere alone, especially at night.

That's what they need to acknowledge and it's what you need to fear for them.

4. You have no idea of the history you're ignoring when you say that.
Racism is far and away more entrenched than sexism, and has a vastly worse history.

5. YOU have no idea of the HERstory you are ignoring
when you say that.

I'm quite aware of the history. Time for you to find out what they'll be facing as WOMEN, and listening to me might just be your first step.

And you wonder why people think that you're out of touch?

I've seen racism, and I've seen sexism. And racism is worse.

7. What's Black? What's white?
My wife is Sicilian, and she has dark skin and kinky hair. She has been subject to racial discrimination. Educate them, build their bodies and minds. Transcend racism.

Nature versus nurture. Be more concerned with what they're taught about standing up for themselves. Screw Jim Crow!
