Pink poodle gets owner trip to court
By Mike McPhee
The Denver Post

Joy Douglas of Boulder dyes Cici with organic beet juice to raise awareness of breast cancer. (Nathan W. Armes, Special to The Denver Post )

Joy Douglas knows all about hair and dyes and making people pretty, but when she did a doggie dye job that turned her poodle pink, Boulder authorities say she went too far.

Never mind it was for a good cause and the dye was organic beet juice, Douglas faces a $1,000 fine under a city animal cruelty ordinance.

Douglas, who owns Zing Hair Salon, decided to color Cici pink to promote awareness of breast cancer.

"Customers come in and ask why the dog is pink," she said. "So we tell them about breast-cancer awareness, about the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, and then we ask for a donation."

But not everyone who saw Cici was amused. Some called the Humane Society of Boulder Valley, which enforces the city's animal ordinances.

2. Who are these people?
Are they trying to justify their jobs? Why don't they go find animals that really are being abused.... jeeez.

4. I like what the first choice says:
"... she didn't technically violate the ordinance, since she stained the dog instead of dyeing it."

I would have a problem with it if she used regular hair dye, but organic beet juice? This is just ridiculous. :banghead:

5. Those folks who reported a dog dyed with beet juice
for a good cause need to get a fucking life. Now if she had dyed the dog with chemicals, I could see the problem.

6. I AGREE! I don't like to see dogs dyed or dressed up for that matter,
but for god sake, she used FOOD as the dye! I hope the Judge laughs these idiots out of his court!

7. The law they are trying to convict her of is bogus anyway
First of all, I live in Boulder. And this is a typical crunchy-granola Boulderite thing to do. I mean, ORGANIC BEET JUICE? To raise awareness for breast cancer? It's not like she dyed the dog with chemicals. Secondly, the ordinance they are trying to enforce is one concerning the dyeing fowls and rabbits. It was put on the books so that pet shops would not dye chicks and rabbits for Easter.

The people who complained need to get a freakin' life. But then again, they are probably the typical crunchy-granola Boulderite-types, too. "Oh my god, we have to SAVE this animal from the organic beet juice!"
