3. According to retired military neighbor, its not uncommon
for current military to salute retired military. I recall Kerry being saluted on occasion during the 2004 campaign.

I didn't know Kerry was saluted, I guess there was never a prominent picture of it plastered all over the place...:think:

4. My dad is a retired Army Lt. Col - and gets saluted often...
whenever he's on base by people who know his former rank. It's a courtesy/nicety that's extended to former service members by current ones.

9. Its a civilian, most likely a veteran, based on the hat
And salutes between vets are not uncommon, especially if they are decorated combat veterans. McCain has a Silver and Bronze stars and a Legion of Merit. Whether you like him or not McCain is genuine thing when it comes to combat decorated veteran.
