Some here might be following the Congresional Race in Illinois 14...Gym Teach Denny's old seat. It features Bill Foster, a dynamic Progressive running against Jim Oberwies...the thrice-failed candidate who appears to have problems running a campaign for what most considered a safe red Congressional Seat. To Foster's credit, he's tapped into the large and untapped city folks and moderate who have put Foster ahead of Oberweis in the polls...with the Election just ONE WEEK AWAY.
And now it appears Oberweis has not only broken laws, but might just break the RNCC piggy bank as well...
http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/2/29/185329/377/196/465592Seems that Oberweis has given his own campaign over $640,000, thus triggering the "Millionaires' Amendment". Only the thing is, he forgot to tell anyone, including his opponent, that he had in fact triggered the Millionaires' Amendment (it would have increased the limits on fundraising from individuals for his opponent, Bill Foster).
According to the FEC, you can't do that.
So the DCCC has filed an FEC complaint against our man Oberweis. And it is likely he will have to pay a hefty fine.
On top of this, he has also had to pull his ads from local TV, for failing to comply with disclaimer rules.
Gee, you'd think he'd be better at this by now.
So the NRCC, perhaps recognizing Oberweis' incompetence, and certainly endowed with the ability to read polls, has apparently swooped in to save the day with a TV ad buy totaling nearly $1 million.
This race is very winnable, folks...and it'd be a real sweet victory to snatch Gym Teach Denny's seat...and also use it to win several more Illinois districts in the process.
