Born-again virgins claim to rewrite the past
Victoria Watts, a 23-year-old single mother of two small children who lives in Canton, Ohio, lost her virginity at 16 with her high school boyfriend.

She was the granddaughter of a Pentecostalist pastor and the daughter of an assistant pastor, and she believed sex outside marriage was wrong. “I felt really bad from a religious standpoint,” she recalls of the experience. “My thoughts were really clouded because I was so emotionally bonded with my boyfriend. That overshadowed my religious world.”

Though the relationship lasted for seven years and produced two beautiful children, a part of Watts always felt guilty. She wished she could step back in time and recapture her lost virginity. Thinking of how “I could have ruined one of greatest fulfillments of my life,” the first time having sex with a husband, she wanted to “have that opportunity again. I know my husband deserves a whole person.”

So Watts engaged in a lot of prayer and thought, and now declares herself a virgin once again. “The most important thing was to realize what my values were and what I want in the future and the bigger goals in my life," she says. "That’s why I can call myself a renewed virgin.”

Across the country, "revirginization" appears to be gaining steam. Spiritual efforts to reclaim virginity emerged back in the early 1990s and now, prompted by abstinence-only school courses taught to thousands of girls nationwide, and by religious teachers, there are reports of more and more young women like Watts attempting a sexual do-over. Other women are opting for a more radical route to reclaim their virginity: surgical replacement of the hymen, the small membrane that stretches from the walls of the vagina and that typically breaks when a woman first has intercourse — or for many other reasons, from tampon use to vigorous exercise.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23254178/

No wonder this country is so screwed when we let delusional people like this vote. So you had sex - so what. And if you go through surgery to replace a hymen you have too damn much money to waste!

The chastity movement objectifies women every bit as much as the purveyors of smut in entertainment.

2. I just got done reading this article at MSNBC as well
Some women must have the surgery to prevent "honor killings". At the same time, those who are doing it for a neato anniversary gift -- I wonder about them.

The artist who started the Virgin Project's comments were very interesting as well.

21. I'm talking about the train of thought that puts virginity on such a pedestal.
And how obsessing over a woman's virginity and her need to remain pure for her future husband can lead a culture to choose something like female circumcision. Because for cultures that choose female circumcision, life and sex is all about the guy and not about the woman's pleasure.

There are allot of guys who 're-virgin'... While this story is about a woman this 'movement' is about chastity, not just female chastity..

25. Well, the subtitle at the link is "Through spiritual or surgical routes, women give their first time
a do-over".

So yeah, I was commenting on women's virginity only. The article was all about women restoring their virginity through prayer or through surgery.

5. Okay that does it!!!!!!!!!!!
This 60 year old crone is getting revirginized. Because when the old goat I have been married to for umpteen years kicks in the towel, I am going to need this for my next husband. I should probably also consider a tummy tuck, liposuction, a small face lift and for good measure, something for the law of gravity in the chest area.

Is it because their parents are constantly telling them how bad it is while cheating on each other with anything that has a heartbeat?

I wouldn't give a nickle to do it again for the first time. It was embarrassingly short and anti-climactic to say the least. It took me a long time and a lot of practice to get good at it. ;-)

11. Boy, her future dates are going to be fun
When she tries to explain to her date that while she does have two kids, she is still a virgin.

There was a comedy skit, British, by whom I can't remember dealing with a guy looking for his virginity as he thought it would be nice to have it back and give it to his soon-to-be wife. A couple of by-standers help him look for it, and in the process, one of them starts naming off all the women he deflowered, and the virginity-seeker's fiance's name is one of them. Turns out that they had both told each other they were virgins, and the fiance had written to her deflowerer asking him to return her virginity as she was getting married soon. It so happened that he was carrying it on him so he gave it to the groom-to-be to return to her... the sound effect being a harp and chirping birds. That taken care of, they returned to looking for his, which they soon found... the sound effect being a large dog barking, sniffing, and slobbering.

Edited on Thu Feb-28-08 12:28 PM by DadOf2LittleAngels
Out sins are *why* we need Christ and though he may wash the guilt away it is not because of our sinlessness that grace is granted but because of Christ sinlessness! Stunts like 're-virgins' only cheapen the wonder that is grace by trying to put some kind of qualifier on ourselves..

53. No...
And I dont consider someone saying 'from this point forward I am going to abstain from sex' or 'I will do X for Y ministry' to be insipid but when you try to say 'I'm revirginized as if you are capable of wiping the sin from your plate' you are cheating what Christ has actually done..

Its because he has covered my sins that grace is miraculous it has nothing to do with me going to Virgin camp doing some ritual and suddenly I have covered my sin..

When Christ hung next to the thieves on the cross he did not 'un-thieve him' he covered the sin..

I think the concept of recapturing sexual purity is a noble one but it should not be aimed at recovering for past sin, the grace of Christ is sufficient for that..

I think this kind of attitude is part of what destroys rape victims and ruins marriages. I wonder if her husband is going to reclaim his virginity? Elevating virginity to the level of salvation is very creepy.

Why don't they just pillage and murder and then claim that didn't happen either? Is that part of their salvation?

She is literally cutting off enormous swaths of her experiences - vast portions of her life that have contributed towards being who she is now.

It's breathtaking in it's immaturity. I can't imagine the brainwashing it takes to get a person to deny so much of who they are/have been.
