John McCain "was" once the darling of the media because...

He was the powerful chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee. He was the person to know if you needed a favor done for your bosses in the communications business. For example, if you wanted to have more than one television station in an urban market, McCain was the man that you needed to suck up to... and it appears that many did just that. The big TV conglomerates, such as FOX-TV and others, never had a better friend than John McCain. He used them and they used him.

In return, he got to be on TV whenever he wanted and they would see that he would never get any bad publicity. They would help him build up his reputation as a "straight shooter". When, in fact, he was a whore for their business and they were all "johns" looking to get in bed with him.

But now, times have changed. He is no longer the chairman of that powerful Commerce Committee. He cannot pull the strings like he could before. The Democrats are in the majority now. They, the media, needs to find a new hero. John McCain is now dispensable.
