LUXEMBURG — An inconvenient truth environmentalists overlook is the amount of estrogen in the water supply, largely due to birth-control pills.

According to an article by Professor Donald Demarco of Holy Apostles College and Seminary, a 2005 Denver Post article describes a study of trout by biologists John Woodling and David Norris in Colorado's Boulder Creek. They found, in addition to intersex fish, the female-male ratio was approximately 10 to 1. (Normal is 1 to 1). They determined this "unnatural feminization" was due to estrogen from birth-control patches and pills, Norplant, and Depo-Provera in the water supply.

How did it get there? When a woman takes birth-control pills, the amount of estrogen pumped into her bloodstream to suppress ovulation is up to 400 times her natural level. These hormones don't metabolize, and enter the water supply through urine. Water treatment plants cannot remove them.

If this is the effect on fish, what about humans? A British newspaper reports that girls are starting to hit puberty at age 3, and preschoolers are getting their periods. Doctors are blaming hormones in food and water. And what is the effect on boys?

This has got to be the silliest anti-BC argument that I've ever heard in my entire life!

2. Other chemicals also produce compounds that mimic estrogen
Dioxin, flame retardants, fertilizers, etc. So what he is saying is not in fact even true.

400 times? I am sure that is wrong.

4. good point. I highly doubt those effects are from birth control pill hormones
getting into the environment. General pollution however IS a problem.

6. The phenomenon is occurring...
It's not clear that BC is the cause. It's a republic's wet dream!
