"liberals can never make up their mind."
how would you respond to this assertion?

it seems to be a common belief that if a person is a liberal, he will be too busy thinking about things to do, to actually get something done.

heck, at the '04 election season i remember hearing someone say that for the debates on television they would need multiple choice questions for bush and time-limits for kerry.

on a side note: alot of european countries don't have a "commander in chief". all military actions have be first approved by the parliament (congress, that is). and they have managed to survive so far.

1. I don't.
If they really think that nothing you can say is likely to change their mind.

2. This liberal has a set of convictions and knows what
it is I want . When one has convictions and pays attention to who says what, we smell a rat while others listen to platitudes. Overseas, mostly you will find less dependence upon sound bites and politicians sound more like the policy wonks Americans tend to find boring. I think the reason Americans choose to listen to political debates overseas, you will find much more liberal time rules. As compared to the US, 90 seconds is considered adequate. In Europe a response to a question will be more like 3-5 minutes.

3. Just Wrap 'Em Up With Their Own Contradictions...
That's an old wingnut talking point...they think we're all Alan colmes. History proves this crap worthless...and I enjoy confronting any repugnican with their own record to prove the opposite.

Iraq for example...wasn't it "conservatives" who were against nation building and the Powell Doctrine of overwhelming force and an exit strategy? Or with the economy...just mention the defecit and watch their heads explode. Tax and spend? How about borrow and cheapen your dollar? Morality? Favor the "rights of the unborn", but also the death penalty? I guess its all in the timing.

If you believe the talking points, you are always at a disadvantage. Inject some truth and reality and the tables always turn in your favor.

Cheers...

8. Because the world changes
First, I probably wouldn't even respond if the person making it was trying the word "liberal" as an insult. Their minds can't be changed anyway. But I would say that people of the liberal persuasion are constantly re-evaluating the world, which changes constantly, and updating their ideas to deliver the most effective policy for TODAY and the FUTURE. Where as conservatives want to keep everything as it was in the past. Since the past never changes, their minds are already made up.

9. Because liberals look at FACTS and take them into account when making choices.
It may appear to be "never" to someone who has their mind made up for them & never has to think for themselves.

11. Liberals tend to engage in more than 2-dimensional thinking.
Liberals tend to be less literal, less "one-size-fits-all," and to acknowledge and deal with the fact that there is rarely one "right" answer to any question.

To a person who craves all the things liberals are not, the practice of engaging more than one perspective probably seems like "not making up their minds."
