There is a very narrow constitutional definition of that particular word that outing Valerie Plame doesn't quite fit.

The Constitution of the United States, Article 3, Section 3:

Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort. No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the Testimony of two Witnesses to the same overt Act, or on Confession in open Court.

Let's see . . . Bush is giving aid to groups known to be associated with Al Qaida, which attacked the US on September 11, 2001 (spare me the conspiracy theories). These same groups are more active in killing US troops than are their Shi'a counterparts, which are supported by Iran.

If what Mr. Hersh is reporting is accurate, then this is treason.

If there is any sliver of truth in this, there is no longer any excuse to keep impeachment off the table, to say nothing of criminal proceedings and incarceration.

Because of political cowardice, we the people are gonna have to push hard for Impeachment. We are going to have to start a groundswell that eventually puts all of our "standard bearers" (2008 Pres Candidates) on notice that that is what we want now.

With this ridiculously early presidential run, our guys will only come to this position if they are made to feel that it is the only way to get, and in the case of congress, keep votes coming their way.

Which is not to say it is smart, which is not to say it is proper, or even legal necessarily, but treason is a very high bar...

The proper focus in any legitimate war on terror is al Qaida. If either you or I gave money to any charity in good faith that betrays our trust by turning around and giving Osama a piece of the action, then you or I could be prosecuted under the Patriot Act.

Mr. Bush is giving aid knowingly to groups that he has every reason to believe will use those funds to further al Qaida's cause. This is treason.

I agree with you that the blowback will be horrendous by whatever label we put on it.
