FUCK PAYPAL -- They won't let me donate to DU
I've had it with this PIECE OF SHIT service. They already hosed my on all of my subscriptions and forced me to close my account. Now when I try to give a $100 donation to DU, I get this:

Based on the details of your transaction, you will need to sign up for a PayPal account and add and verify a bank account to complete this payment. Once it is verified, you can return to the merchant's site to initiate this payment again. Please provide the information requested below and click 'Save Information' to sign up.

Of course, even if I would give them my back account information (ha!), there's nothing marked "Save Information" on the fucking page.

"PayPal - the safer, easier way to pay." My Ass. :nuke:

there was a notice on the donation page that says if you donate anonymously, such as through amazon, you can email the admin. If you show proof of payment, they will award you your star and presumably hearts too.

Never again!

My credit card is now outdated...it happens, of course.

So when I tried to put in the new one...would they accept it?

NO!

I just went ahead and did my donation the hard way...By hand, using DU's format...

All of my subscriptions got bounced. I got kicked out of ad-free RawStory, lost my Founder status at nova-m, etc, etc, etc. I sent them a bunch of emails and nobody ever got back to me.

So I closed the account. I guess I'll have to reopen it if I want to donate. :grr:

10. And, I got a strange phishing email from Paypal telling me someone in Europe was trying to use my
account. (I don't have a Paypal "account".) I was given a link and asked for all kinds of personal information to "save" my Paypal account.

Yeah, rrrrright! Like I'm going to fall for any of that nonsense. Anyway, if Paypal's involved--I steer clear. I'd like to donate again to DU, but I DO NOT want Paypal as the middleman. If Paypal remains DU's only donation outlet, I will be very hesitant to donate because I do not trust their security. Please bring back the credit card option!

I just copied and pasted this from the Donation Page:

Make a One-time Donation by Credit Card or eCheck
Powered by PayPal. You do not need a PayPal account in order to donate to Democratic Underground.

This is how I donate to DU as well...

With a credit card.

It's tedious, but it works!

51. I know it was a phishing email! But two years ago I bought something using Paypal
Edited on Tue Feb-12-08 05:58 PM by samdogmom
and my credit card number was compromised. I started getting all sorts of strange charges from places I had never been. I had to cancel the credit card and to this day, I do not trust Paypal's ability to keep credit card numbers confidential. (Believe me it's no fun to contest bogus credit card charges. You have to write multiple letters and send in supporting documentation. It's a real pain in the neck!) As I said before, if I have to donate to DU via Paypal, then I have serious concerns. I know there is a mail-in option. I will be using this method from now on, unless they bring the direct credit card option back again.

I am very glad you haven't had a problem yet using Paypal, but I truly don't think you're "safe". Good luck!

On Edit: I'm very suspicious where the phishing emailer got my email address. From Paypal, maybe?

61. I seriously doubt your email address was compromised by paypal
(I don't work for them or have -any- connection with them whatsoever other than as a customer)

There are literally millions of ways for emails to be picked up. Your CC number was probably intercepted by someone at the vendor rather than through paypal but yes I know it's a pain. The convenience outweighs the risk to me.

64. Ummm, here's where I have a problem with your theory.
Edited on Tue Feb-12-08 06:47 PM by samdogmom
If I paid Paypal--why was my credit card number passed on to a vendor? Doesn't Paypal take my money (as the middleman) and pay the vendor directly? There is no need to pass my credit card number on to a vendor using Paypal.

Sorry, but I will never forgive them for compromising my credit card number AND the phishing email was the last straw. As far as I'm concerned, this is an untrustworthy company and I refuse to give them my hard-won new credit card number!

Edited for spelling.

Edited on Tue Feb-12-08 04:51 PM by Thepricebreaker
Is a risky business owning a merchant account - and its their way of cutting liability.

Someone can simply send a donation to DU - then charge it back a few weeks later - and paypal is left holding the bag on the charge back fee's.

For something like a $100.00 purchase they are of course going to ask for back up information, so you can't make a fraud donation/purchase.

.. and they WILL let you donate - with the proper information.

Its basically so if you fraud them, they can bang out your bank account.

52. Dude, I've had a paypal account for years and never had a problem with them.
If you closed your old account and started a new one, of course you will have to give them your banking info. If you don't have a credit or debit card, you have to supply a checking account with your routing number. How else do you suppose they make a transaction? You *HAVE* to have a credit/debit card or a checking account tied to the paypal account.

Also, I believe it's a new security measure by setting your limits to 0.00 ... once you make the account, you have to log into the account, then go into your profile and change your sending limits manually...

ANY merchant account *HAS* to be tied to your bank account. PERIOD.

They've had to change a few security practices due the overwhelming presence of online phishing scams and abuse.

It's got a seriously high limit and I've never had a problem with it. For some reason, they switched out my card to one I closed three years ago.

Now, even with the information restored, they can't seem to put through a payment. They had my CC#, but the only way they would allow me to make a payment was to give them by bank account. That's not gonna happen.

Every subscription, including DU, RawStory and even my frickin Bridge Toll autopay bounced back to me two weeks ago. I'm still not through straightening it all out (including $400 in unpaid toll violations that I have to get reversed). Paypal fucked me over bigtime.

As far as Karl is concerned, this kind of commentary has been his M.O. for a while. I'm not sure why he gets off on it, but it can get annoying.
