Did I shake hands with the next vice president of the US this morning?
When I went over to my local school to vote in this morning's primary, I ran into my neighbor (we live on the same street), Senator Jim Webb. As I was shaking his hand, it occurred to me -- this could be the next vice president of the United States.

3. I'd hate to lose him in the senate
I wonder if John Edwards would ever consider trying to win in NC for the senate..isn't Dole's seat coming up soon?

4. Could be. I also see Joe Biden a strong possibility still.

7. I dunno... I think Biden would hate to lose his power in the Senate....
Both Dem candidates are strong personalities, and whomever becomes their VP's will likely take a back seat to them. I can't see a guy like Joe Biden doing that.

6. Highly unlikely
The balance of power in the Senate, and the fact that Webb is "safe" for another four years militates against his getting the Veep nomination.

Far more likely that the nominee the SuperDelegates choose for us will choose a governor or someone out of office at the moment. Bill Richardson comes to mind. So does a ladder-climibing coal whore like Joe Manchin from my own WV (a possibility that gives me the turtle squirts).

I'm also betting that Edwards would accept a V-P nod, as well. Lots of possibilities out there that don't involve weakening our presence in the Senate, especially with Virginia on the verge of getting its second democratic Senator in Mark Warner.

8. valid consideration
You may be right. However, with Mark Warner poised to make a Democratic pickup and with a Democratic governor in place to make a temporary appointment, the immediate impact would be a net gain. The temporary appointment would run until a new election was held in November 2009. Who might get the temporary appointment and whether that person or someone else might get the seat in 09 is hard to say.

(I should note that I haven't checked VA law to see whether Webb would have to resign his seat in order to run for VP or whether he would only have to resign if elected).
