Virginia regrets: birthplace of slavery apologises

THE legislative body of Virginia has expressed "profound regret" for slavery and the exploitation of Native Americans, four centuries after the state gave birth to both ills in America.

The collective expression of remorse by Virginia's General Assembly, said by legislators to be the first of its kind in the US, comes amid a season of soul-searching before May commemorations of the 400th anniversary of the first permanent English settlement in America, at Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607.

The House of Delegates approved the resolution 97-0 in a vote on Saturday in the state capital, Richmond, and the Senate followed suit later in the day.
