i'm surprised he is supporting McCain. i would think Huckabee would be more his type.
<“Kansas is going to be very tough,” said Republican Sen. Sam Brownback in what one could call an extreme example of lowering expectations. Brownback, a conservative former presidential candidate traveled aboard McCain’s campaign plane from Washington, D.C. this morning to a rally at a private air hangar in Wichita. (McCain told the crowd: “We can win in Kansas and we need it, and I’d be very honored by your support.”)
But Brownback, who is leading the charge for McCain here, remembered another Republican presidential nomination contest in Kansas between a moderate war hero and a noted religious conservative. It was 1988 when native son Bob Dole nearly lost to evangelical minister Pat Robertson.
“The state is well positioned for Mike Huckabee,” he said of the former Arkansas governor and Baptist minister. Huckabee campaigned here yesterday and today. Turnout is likely to be low, Brownback said, which usually hurts McCain. “It’s not been well advertised, and it may seem to a lot of people ‘well this is almost over so why go to it.’” Christian conservative leader James Dobson endorsed Mike Huckabee yesterday. “It’s a tough dynamic for John McCain in Kansas.”
And then the kicker: “Every state they’ve asked me to go to, they lose,” said Brownback. He’s barnstormed on behalf of his Senate buddy in four losing states: Iowa, Michigan, North Dakota and Montana. Of Kansas, he said, “If this is a loss, it’s my fault.”>
