Real vs. Contrived Issues
This is from the Friday press briefing at the WH:

MR. STANZEL:

In the fall we're going to have a vigorous debate between the Republican nominee that we believe will have the right positions on matters of war and peace, and matters of taxes, and matters of making sure that we use the people's money wisely. And so that time is approaching.

and then:

MR. STANZEL: I think the party will be united in the fall, because there will be very clear choices between a Republican nominee and the nominee of the Democratic Party. So, yes, that's what the President was talking about today, is there will be some very clear differences between a candidate that wants to retreat on the war on terror, and our approach, which is to aggressively fight terror; or a candidate who wants to raise taxes versus those who want to keep them low.

We know where the voting public is against the large scale continued occupation of Iraq. The polls also suggest that voters see Democrats as being more competent to handle the "war" on the word Terror.

The polls also suggest that Dems are more competent on the economy. That the Rethuglicans are using the same old "raise takes" canard is a good sign. Especially when they have ballooned the deficit.

So where do you think the Rethugs will hit us? I am putting money that they do not intend to win in 08. Instead, they plan to inflict as much damage as possible upon the Democratic party and start dividing it up using as much race and gender baiting as possible. They will continue to use divisive issues to try and keep us angry and/or apathetic and make us all look weak, angry, incompetent or whatever other smear they can throw upon us.

Already, their strategy can be seen working here on DU. If we intend to keep any semblance of control and move forward on issues of great concern for us all, then we need to either grow incredibly thick skins and become just like our enemy. Or we need to remain united and use our numbers against the bullies.

We need to stop baiting each other.
We need to stop responding to those that create threads intended to provoke, even if they are for our candidate.
We need to start creating threads that bash the true opposition.
We need to recognize each other as sharing a belief in a strong, progressive, liberal, democratic nation. Free of sexism and racism. Dedicated to ensuring EVERY single American's right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

We all have a good idea what ails this nation. We all believe our candidate is capable of addressing those ills. Let us all try and respect the fact that we all share a common purpose.

Peace
